DR650: Where to get...
« on: March 06, 2011, 07:42:41 PM »
...brake caliper pistons and seals??

About 3 years ago I rebuilt the rear brake caliper with new seals and just cleaned up the pistons. They weren't badly pitted.

I suspected that would be the last time that the bike needed a brake rebuild, as it was probably not long for this world.  (It has subsequently had a new clutch, fork seals, front and rear pads, plenty oil, 2 pairs of tyres.... the fucker just will not die!!!)

Anyway I normally buy gen Suzi parts for things like this. Tho fuck knows why.  Probably because its a slightly oddball model, imported, and the parts fit.

Does anyone know where to get pistons and seals??

Or am I paying thru the nose again??  To illustrate this, 2 seals and 2 dust seals last time was 24 quid, for 4 little bits of neoprene.  My false economy of not replacing the pistons then has come back to haunt me!    I would think pistons will be something daft like 15 quid each, meaning it will be another 60 quid to keep this (lovely, but knackered) old nail on the road.

Yes, they were my first port of call.

But no "DR650" pistons and seals.  The I suspect if I pump them out an measure them, they may well have some which would be suitable.  I notice a lot of s/s pistons and seals sold by size tho.

And with regard to seals, I have in the past bought seals by size as opposed to by model, only to have leaking pistons after a week or so.  (Thus my use of OEM seals).  Did you guys buy by size?  Or did you only get the pistons from wemoto?

I rode in today using too much fuel and asking to warp my rear disk!

I willpush the pistons back, and just not use the rear brake (that is a feat in central london on the woefully braked DR!)

And email them.  Unless, of course, anyone knows the dimensions of the dimensions of the pistons???

Will post prices from Suzi later today....  :o   I expect!!

I bought my stainless pistons for the XBR off Ebay. Seals were Hi-Level pattern jobs ordered direct from Hi-Level from the bike shop where I used to work.

www.patternparts.net are worth a try.

What year/model is your bike?

Hello Dave (And others!)

Checked Ebay, but no joy for my specific model.... not sure of cross references.

Any help much appreciated here, so here goes:

Its a US import 1990/1991 DR650S.  SP41A model.  Same as the Djebel as I can understand.  Kickstart only, single exhaust.

I presume this caliper is used on a number of DR600/640/750 bikes....?

Thanks as ever!

Hmmm.  Very reasonable....

Will enquire!  But suspect they'll need sizes....  I just dont want to take the bike off the road for a few days.   The tube works out at 7 quid a day.

I also dont want to tax the skorpion before the DR runs out   :D :D

Yes, I am tight as fuck!

Will push the pistons back in just now, and try not to use the rear stopper...

Hi Andy.
I dunno if this is any help...

Just had a gander through the Hi-Level catalogue. Your specific model isn't listed (there's a surprise!) but DR650 models from '90 to '95 (and about 14 pages of other makes and models) are listed with rear piston part no. 282731. This part number is a kit containing 1 piston with both seals, piston measurements are 27mm x 31mm. Not stainless though.

www.Gear4Bikes.com are doing them for £16.50 (inc VAT) per piston but they're not listed under DR650 so you'd have to search the Hi-Level part number on their site.

www.Patternparts.net are doing the seals for £5.10 (inc VAT) per piston but, again, they're not specifically listed for your model. It looks like you're going to have to get the Vernier out.

I've not found any stainless pistons. I expect you'll have to order them by size.

All the best,

Dave B

Thanks Dave,

That is a lot of help, and I really appreciate your taking the time.

Yes, looking at pics, it would appear that a few DR650s had this rear caliper.  However, the 2 pistons are different sizes so this one -->

...Hi-Level ...rear piston part no. 282731. This part number is a kit containing 1 piston with both seals, piston measurements are 27mm x 31mm.

I will measure up this evening and see if wemoto have my diameter.  Thats a good start!  I have emailed them to ask if they think have what I need....

I think the caliper is the same as this (very nice model, owned previously by two very nice men)   :)  which is a 1992....  Hmmmm....  Will measure and report back.

Thanks!

Aye Andy,

Googled and found this link: 'DR650 rear brake piston'!! ???

Strange that an employee of Weemoto thinks otherwise! ;) Perhaps they have the last stocks in the world!  :o The rest were placed in the officially redundant spares recycling bin, beloved of the Japanese enforced obsolescence culture!

I hope the link proves positive and the employee is incorrect. If not, I might be bunged with a corroded piston from a rear caliper! VERY unpleasant.

Toodle pip, Bill.

Andy, try PMing 'Silverfox' he may have a calliper for sale or at least handy for him to measure the pistons for you.

Hi Andy,

I guess you probably saw this anyway, Ebay item No. 120481004462, this is the same as my DR650RE, I ahve a spare poor condition front caliper I took the mount off obtained from Silverfox, don't know if you could move the pistons in it, it appears to be quite a light use but badly stored item. You are welcome to try to use anything from it.

And again, I think this will do the trick.  Thank you bill!  Stainless a bonus and still cheaper than Mr Suzuki    :)

**edit - actually I need pre-96.  **

I like stainless...

Bill, have not had any contact yet, I think its just that I was being too specific, going for the SP41A designation.    ;D

Thanks all, for help
