Hmmmm.  I had a bit of a "road to damascus" as I lay unable to sleep.

Subsequently went back out, removed the caliper (this morning!).  Diameter is indeed 27mm.  But I cannot see the piston being 31mm deep, my caliper just isn't deep enough to accomodate this.

The *internal* depth is 19mm, and from the "bearing" surface (ie back of pad) to the *outside* of the caliper (ie.  I haven't removed the pistons) is 31mm....

The "back" of the piston wouldn't be a big (unsprung!) lump of 10+ mm of metal, leaving the pads proud, would it??

So I think this is what I need (but pref. s/s!) -->

http://motorcycleproducts.co.uk/catalogue/caliper-piston-suzuki-dr650r-199094-rear-p-217672.html

However, googling the suzuki part no gives -->

http://www.cmsnl.com/suzuki-dr650-1993-rup_model13256/partslist/FIG-50.html

which would make sense, its just that these pistons seem to be "long and thin (ie. 27x31) as opposed to "Short and fat" (presumably 27 x 22).  May just be an inaccurate diagram tho... (same as my OEM suzi manual)

Will google some dimesnsions and other models....

cheers.... I am a boring bastard, I know!

It's never simple, is it!

I had similar issues with my French import XL.
It looks like you're getting somewhere. It's strange though, that the RSEM and RSEN are listed elsewhere with 31mm depth pistons.

I must admit, if I were you I'd have given up and pulled the bugger out and measured it my now  :)

Heh!

Yeah, I know, I was trying not to remove the pistons until I had new ones to put in.

But then, I'm not using the back brake just now anyway, so I dont suppose its much odds....

I will pump it out tonight I think, and try to force the piston back in.  THat way, at least I'll have *some* rear brake   ::)

I'm probably just being a dick.  If they are 27x22, this looks good.  -->

Can you see a problem in fitting non "Suzuki DR650 pistons" to my caliper??  27mm is a nominal measurement anyway, right??  They should be just under that, not 27.000mm?

cheers

Andy, I have only just read this thread. I can probably make you the pistons if I can locate some material and you supply the exact sizes or even a sample.
Just a thought.

I don't reckon it'll be a problem. My XBR pistons weren't bike specific, I just went by size. I've just checked my ebay feedback out of curiosity and my pistons came from here...
