On being paranoid - oil
« on: April 18, 2007, 05:31:50 PM »
If you were me and had just had the sump drain on your beloved bullet helicoiled and the chap (reliable fellow) said that he had used an oily tap to catch the swarf and then flushed the engine with the old oil which was a week old anyway and then replaced it with some semi-synth stuff, would you drop that oil when you got home and refill with even more fresh?

without a shadow of a doubt.

for all a few litres of oil costs, compared to the cost of having your bike in hospital....

Yep, and I'd pass it through a filter. If I found a single filing I'd flush it again, if I didn't I'd still chuck the oil, but I'd sleep a little easier :-)

Yes, and if I had the tiniest shadow of a doubt still remaining I'd change the oil *and* filter after the first hundred miles.
I wouldn't however use semi-synth for the first lot as it's not going to be in there long enough to make any difference!

(and because I'm normally skint as well as paranoid :D )

If these have an oil filter fitted change it now.  A little alloy swarf will go through the oil pump but stop at the filter. If it dont have a filter change the oil a few times. It shouldent do a lot of harm to roller bearings but would damage shells

OK! job done. That's the fourth change in a week and a half. I ended up using 15/40 diesel mineral as I will change it again before it is due. Funny thing was it never takes the full 2.25L closer to 1.5-1.7L but so long as the dipstick is happy I am happy.

thanks for all the advice and for re-inforcing my paranoid tendencies

No one here abouts stocks mongrades 40 or 50 weight. Where do you get yours or is that a silly question and how much does it cost roughly? After all one doesn't want to end up paying through the nose now.

Despite being a 'Dumpling' by birth, I ain't getting involved!

Just to say Chatsworth is the 40 SAE and does fine in Duke singles, roller big ends. Hardcastle, is just that for the oil pump when cold, but required for tired Indian plain big ends to keep them 'quiet'!

However, I should like to point out, that I am not insinuating that the 'Stalwarts' big end requires 'Hardcastle' because its tired!

I think I need to STOP!

Bye bye, Bill

My Big End is of the Roller variety !
Apparently with a silver plated needle caged bearing.....!
And have fitted oil pumps that deliver over 50% more than the standard items.

So I think I can get well lubed when required.
