Storms
« on: December 24, 2013, 12:40:48 PM »
I hope you all survived the storms ok. I lost the roofing felt from my workshop roof, mig welder soaked and water on the lathe. I have made temporary repairs to the roof so Im hoping it will survive the next storm.
Luckily the bike is indoors so at least I dont have to worry about that

Aye Joolz,

Onduline or similar if you are strapped for cash or galvanised steel @ £1-50 per linear foot. Straight on top of the boards. I've done my lean to, with felt that had started to go porous on 18mm OSB, with galvanised steel sheets. No leaks now and unlikely to blow away, using screw fixings torqued in with a blob of silicone and at ~600mm centres along the sheet and ~400mm across the troughs. All screwed down onto 70mm x 40mm frame that is coach bolted to transmission pole uprights 1000mm in the ground!

If you get the chance of profile steel sheet with 40mm + foam on the back, grab it and put that on, you won't recognise the inside of the shed, for warmth and sound insulation.  ;D

Felt always appears cheaper, but even the expensive varieties seem to let go after 5 - 10 years on roofs with shallow pitch.

ACF50 might help with dispersing the water in/on the lathe and MIG.

Hope your jury rig stays in place for Friday and you can get sorted.

My regards, Bill.

We are very washed out now, I have lost the roof of the workshop, everything in there is soaked, the fence panels have gone and water is coming in the house from the flat roofs and damaging the plaster, and the wallpaper in the toilet has peeled off.
How is everyone else fairing ?

Here on Orkney have been watching weather down south. We have got away with most of it. Probably cos every thing here is designed for 100mph plus winds. That said everyone here feels sympathetic for the terrible weather your having.
We all get Heavier as we get Older because there is a lot more information in our heads

Aye Joolz,

BU**ER!  Sorry to read of your trials and tribulations and hope that you can get sorted. I suspect the groundwater is the worst, as that will take months to sort itself out.

Same as Beeman in Orkney, here in Perthshire, not many hoolies but plenty of water and wet snow below about 750', above that and especially on the Cairngorms and Ben Nevis area huge amounts of snow, the ski tow and chair lift towers are buried!  :o  The rain has been incessant, but today cleared after 12 midday and this afternoon has been blue sky, 10C and all the birds think its spring. Bit colder tonight, with a full moon and down to about 2C as I write.

I believe Shetland had gales to storm force winds for at least a week, a couple of weeks ago. The Low pressures just butted up against the Scandanavian High and the isobars just got steeper, but no news about it as thats the way it is at this time of the year up there.

My regards, Bill.

We had the builder round for a quote, it turns out the water leaking into the house is not coming from the flat roofs. The wind has lifted the house roof on one side and rain water is running down inside the cavity. They will have to put up scaffolding and rebuild part of the roof, its going to be a big job.

OH! Suffering succotash Joolz!

Insurance? Although they are often the chargrin of many a motorcyclist.

After February 'fill dyke', we get March coming in like a lamb or going out like a lamb! The problem being the bl**dy lion that is accompanying the wee dodger!

Wish you all the best, that the builder knows what he is doing and the money doesn't get silly.

My regards, Bill.

Well we had the insurance here, good news and bad, They say that the damage to the outside is wear and tear, but the inside is storm damage......work that one out! so we are going to have to find half the money for the repairs.
My workshop survived despite being flooded multiple times, but I had a guy out to test the electrics and tools, only the arc welder and drill failed, so thats up and running again.
The jet engine I was restoring, will need another full rebuild (waste of a years work)
My XBR is still months behind, the new tank and seat are nearly finished, but I have still not sent the head off to have the fins welded on, and it hasn't had the frame respray and rebuild, Its been a very busy winter keeping the water at bay, so I have had almost no free time.
I already have 2 bikes in for repair, I just finished rebuilding and restoring a little TS50 (The one owned by the lad which he claimed was being damaged while he was at work, read one of my older posts)
and now his sisters GPz500s which she gave to her friend to fix and respray, and he has totally ruined it, with a matt black paint job even over the stickers, So strip that off and give it a decent respray and make some minor repairs.

Life is so unfair sometimes. I always happens when you are either not expecting it, or aren't equipped to deal with it, or both!
