Off Topic: Landy sort of....
« on: June 05, 2013, 03:25:58 PM »
OK, my wife says I am going  to need in the not to distant future a 4x4. So which one to start looking for:

1. Needs reasonable 40 + mpg
2. Pickup? but then see 1.
3. Want to be able to offroad.
4. Want to fit front and rear winch
5. Would like to keep it as mechanically simple as possible

May I suggest for "Bombproof" longevity any model using the Toyota Hilux base. Brother-in-law uses an imported South African 'Surf', body rot in the pick-up bit is a bit sore, but the rest is fine. Spares are reasonable and you can crawl underneath to fix it without a jack etc.

The alternative, if a bit more 'plush' is required, would be a Nissan Patrol, crew cab job. My next door neighbour tows a Fergie T20 with 2 furrow mounted plough to various ploughing matches or else hitches a 24+' bemoth of a caravan to cart around at ~40 - 45mpg. At present using at least 20% less diesel per week, than a LR Discovery MKIII that was consuming itself at a rate of knots and spare parts for LR are extortionate and poor quality! Even worse is the requirement to remove the body on some models to replace the exhausts etc. Absolutely barking!

Wee Suzuki's also appear hardy, but you have to be able to cope with being jiggled about as though you are in a perambulator on cobbles at 30mph! The Memsahib may not approve!  >:(

Just to add spice on the price of spares, the electric fuel pump on the Bros packed up and the 'official' replacement costs £165-00. The alternative replacement BMC type Mini fuel pump costs between £60-00 and £80-00! Whilst the cheap and fitted option is the vacuum operated fuel pump from a lawn mower at £15-00. Bros now runs and ticks over loverly and my wife is happy!  ;D ;D ;D

Toodle pip, Bill.

Disco are known for Rot !
How big ?  My little Suzuki is surprisingly agile and capable off-road !
And pretty good running costs so far.But not a huge amount of room.

I think you will be wanting to look at some sort of Crewcab........Pick-up and room for Four.
Landy 130. Host of Jap stuff.
Have heard that Toyota Surf are prone to body rot.

A family member had a Hi-lux which went through two engines.  Cost a fortune each time.

Well if you don't ask, John, you don't get, or come to know that you cannot.  :-[

Isuzus are pretty popular here. They mostly concentrate on trucks, but their 4x4s have a good reputation and wi8ll run forever on a tank of diesel.

My mate, who runs a car repair business, took over two hours changing a light bulb in a Volkswagen 4x4 Chelsea tractor yesterday. He was fuming. No access at all without removing inner wings. etc.

And... he had one of those Navarro pick-ups in a while ago that needed new wheel bearings (it had been used as a boat launcher). Trouble is, you can't just replace the bearings, you have to buy a complete hub!  ::)

A mate just had the gearbox let go on his Jap crewcab, *BIG* expense :-(

TBH I doubt you'll get your whole wishlist, Hi-lux and similar are good, but when something breaks it's big bucks, Landrovers (ie series/defender/90/110) are spectaculary good off road and spares are cheap if you're canny, but they can go through spares, the trick for economy is to get one with a modern engine, 35mpg++ is normal along with excellent power, "modern" rovers, eg disco's rangies etc are just as bad as the jap stuff for body rot and can eat spares as well, though you can bobtail a cheap rangie for pennies and have a very useful off-road device.

What are the front and rear winches intended for? I have no problem with them, but 90% of winches are expensive deadweights which just add to the fuel consumption, and a good single winch can sometimes be run round to the other end of the vehicle if you're good....
Also when you say you want to off road, are we talking visiting the local horse show, getting down to a beach or off road trialing?

I'd say, as Bill suggests, hi-lux, trooper or similar if you can avoid body rot and ultimate off road ability is not critical, Landy series/defender with a modern TDi engine if off road ability matters, or tricked out baby suzuki if you don't need loadspace/towing ability.
Def keep an eye on your local off road club/s though, the motors might get a harder time, but they're maintained by enthusiasts who wont sell a pup when they know you can come back to them and it might affect their reputation within the club...

my brother has a shogun turbodiesel, he has had it for nearly 10 years now, and it wasnt new when he got it,  its clunky and quirky, not faults, but its just, well, agricultural, but for all that, its never ever gone wrong, nothing, in a decade, not a bulb, a battery, not even a fuse. he gets it serviced once a year before he goes on his hols in it, cornwall, scotland, not close by, and it just goes on and on. its getting a bit scabby. not rusty or rotten, just like a car that gets used all the time all over the place. the only time he lifts the bonet is to top up the washer bottle. now ive had landys and the bonnet hinges wear out. dont get me wrong, if my lotto nubers come up i will have another, but thats cos i could afford to run it then! my mates defender 110 has had its head gasket go twice, numerous oil leaks, a duff gearbox, transfer box, plus the charging and injection systems have needed fixing, and the chassis at the back has rotted away. now the old boy over the road from me had a pajero, which is pretty much a tricked up shogun, it was an import from saudi, and is a stock shogun but fully loaded, electric mirrors, windows, sunroof, seats, air con, adjustable everything, its a similar age to my brothers, and again he hasnt had a single solitary thing go wrong in the 4 years he has had it. they arent my cup of tea, but they do seem to go on for absolute ever.  neither get much more than 30 to 35mpg, but they do seem to have a good reputation. as an aside, when i had landys, the mechanic at the local land rover garage, the guy charged with fettling all them solihul 4x4s,,,,,,,,,,,, also had a shogun!!!!!

I had a Nissan Terrano.  Rot so bad I just scrapped it and left it behind, buying a Discovery to get me home.  Three bulbs have blown so far, in a year.  All were simplicity itself to change.

I had a Daihatsu Fourtrak too - the chassis rotted badly and cost rather a lot to get it fixed.  Engine seemed invincible.  Farmers around here used to use them a lot.

There is something to be said for the Suzuki Jimny - tough, small, reasonable on fuel and you won't be doing any touring in it as you have the A**i for the family.  One transferable winch and away.
