New start?
« on: January 01, 2012, 03:03:52 PM »
Sorry I went MIA in 2011 guys. Things got on top of me and I decided to make my life simpler.

I promise to take more interest in the club from now on.

You all well?

Nothing wrong with a simple life, but glad you're back. You need a bike working now  :)

Plan for 2012 here is to get the MZ back on the road and do some mileage other than going to work.

LOL. Yeah, if only it was as easy as saying that you want a simple life...

I just trimmed off some of the things that got me down and/or soaked up valuable family time. It then seemed like all the other ******* just filled up the gaps that were left so it was hard to think I was better off. However, this year has been a stand-out year for two reasons:
My marriage is still strong and I've spent much more time with my boys.
I finally started to address my weight gain and since early July I've been running regularly and enjoying it a lot. Here are some pics of my last running event: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150534062365987.429752.596035986&type=3
I still need to lose some weight, but it's all going the right way.

It's also been nice enjoying life without petty bickering and childish behaviour except on the part of my children who are, after all, children. My wife still nags me like a bugger though.

On the down side it was horrible losing club member Bruce Pollard earlier this year. That one event changed my outlook on all sorts of things. Sorry if it sounds melodramatic and don't think I'm trying to say that Bruce was a close friend or anything. However, he was a fantastic bloke and it was sobering to see how quickly your expectations can be changed by an unexpected illness.

Cheers

Hello Ian, wasn't Stafford a hoot this year eh?

Surely if I am the least involved club member this year then you are in the running for most involved. Your efforts at Uttoxeter in particular were extraordinary.  Mind you all those involved in the shows and the rally (and this website) did great work.

Well, like you #1 i had made a decision several months ago, that A) i was watching the scales creep up past 13 1/2 stone, a problem which needed adressing and B) i had really done nothing much in the way of serious excercise for 15 years when i stopped racing a pushbike after a crash which left me in hospital.
With 4 Mike Burrows bikes in the garage (still) including my recumbent.... i figured I should resurrect them and get out...
IT WAS HARD!... bloody hell, my arse hurt my lungs hurt in fact... everything hurt.. but i stuck with it doing about 60 road miles a week and 2 hours on the turbo trainer (which i found under my now derelict caravan) and i entered my clubs new years day 10 mile time trial. satisfying in as much as I completed it...and didn't fall off, and averaged over 20 miles an hour... somewhat depressing that when i stopped racing 15 years ago my best time for a '10' was 21:49, still, i think i'll manage better than the 29:38 which was my time the other day, as the season progresses.... it gives me a target, and for some reason I can't just go out for a ride.... i need to compete (probably why i'm a bit of a track day junkie on the srx) ... anyway.. less of this rubbish... good to have you back in the swim GC... keep up the running

Good to hear you're back in the saddle. I wasn't a great racer, I just don't have the killer competitive urge. I actually enjoy a bimble on my bicycles and I really miss my recumbent.

Yesterday I went on a 'Harris Tweed' cycle ride, inspired by this current fad for 3-speed and single-speed 'sit up and beg' bikes and edwardian riding gear.

Erm... not my best look   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I say young man... very dapper if i may say so... the old plus fours look a treat (pity about the bloke wearing 'em  :D v)

I've not been out on the recumbent... in fact i shall probably fettle it and bung it on Ebay in the spring...
I wa round Mike Burrows workshop before Christmas, getting my Off Road bike fixed... love his workshop... literally hundreds of his creations lying about... he really is brilliant innovative engineer
