I wonder how worn your discs/pads were.  Still shouldn't happen mind.

Could have had an unhappy ending too, glad you are okay.

Very little wear at all, I don,t use the back brake much. The retaining pin and spring clip had fallen out. Not a good design.

Well I have found the problem, on inspection the hole locating the pin has worn oval so the pin retaining mechanism is ineffective and the new pins just falls out as well.

Can they be drilled and have small R-clips fitted ?

Thats an option I hadn't considered, the other is to replace it with an M4 bolt and locknut. The drilling option might be neater

r clips are the way forward. i've changed most of the bikes i'v owned to them and never had a problem. I would shy away from a bolt as its ripe for siezing in. Ever tried to get one of thoser stupid 'protective' cap/covers off a nissin calipers' pin after its been on there a while? It's not a lot of fun i can tell you.

The bolt would be stainless so shouldn't be too bad. The R clip approach would need careful drilling, I was thinking I could drill through a 4mm nut, from top to bottom, and use that as a guide. Anyone know where I can get R clips from ?

If I've understood you right, they use that type of fixing on the Yamaha FZS1000 .
