After being surrounded by Ténérés this weekend (hereafter called 'Tens' because I can't be bothered using the alt button for all the accents) I got to wondering, what does a Beemer GS do that the Ten (see, much easier) can't? I can't think of a nicer bike to take adventure riding.

On my way home I stopped at a bikers caff and a group of GSs rode in with one Ten amongst them. The BMWs looked like a lot bike to be doing the same job.

My personal opinion is that the Ten will actually off road if that's your thing. The BM will take a pillion much more easily if you are talking of the horizontal twin pot. Whereas the new GS twin pot parallel is £3K more to begin with is much taller and the fuel tank is 16 litres. The rear subframe is not as sturdy as the Tens (info from Metal Mule) and you don't have to give your credit card to Mr Yamaha!
As Mark will testify the Ten is quite crashable and bendable backable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....and with a tank range of 300 miles it ticks all of my boxes!

I was going to tell all about the Captain Haddock style messages interspersed in this thread, but suffice to say that it all stems from a comment Jethro made this weekend.

As for Tens, yep, if you are pointing a bike at anything gnarly you don't need the engine getting in the way if you crash it... and it helps if the whole thing weighs as little as possible.

CB500s? Well they are pretty light and very crashable too. I did a mini stationary turn on one this weekend, planting a boot on the deck, standing up off the bike and letting the spinning rear wheel turn the bike.

Mind you, I remember once doing that on a Yamaha 125 scrambler and planting my face in the mud to the delight of over 20 onlookers
