That's a real shame about the leaking, I was very much considering a wax set for the winter as I'm sick of gore tex.

You wont like Wax Cotton then !!!!!!

Jethro

Somewhere in the loft are my dads old wax cotton overmitts. I used to use them, his old Belstaff wax jacket and some surplus trousers for my winterproofs. Thing is, Gore tex is a real crappy product. Bare with me. Because of the way it's constructed, the outer layer has to be loose to allow the gore tex to breathe, problem is, this outer layer doesn't shed the water, rather it soaks it up, meaning that whilst you may be dry inside, your outer is soaked. Should you have the misfortune to take the clothing off for a while, leave it for a few hours, then put it back on, you'll find it now feels wet and clammy on the inside. Sucks.
I was hoping that with regular treatment, a wax jacket would see me sorted and I could sell off the gore tex stuff. The other kit of interest is the Halvarssons stuff, but anyway, enough topic drift...

Don't listen to those who rant against the wax.  Excellent stuff, just takes a bit of living with and waxing up in a warm place.  Improves with wearing, bit like many TC members.

If I ever get any spare cash I'll be investing in another.

Huh ?   I have one of the cheap Campbellcooper ones from ebay that were slagged off by the maker of the leaky jacket

I bought it in 2003, I've worn it in all weathers, haven't reproofed it, and it still doesn't leak.

I've ordered the £99 one from chequered flag, so we'll see. This is almost scientific testing  :o!

I've worn the Drizabone on all my winter runs over a few miles and am impressed. I used a waxed shooting jacket as my first ever bit of bike kit. This means I'm used to two things. First of all I expect the annual boil/paint on/get nostrills fumigated/go to the pub until the house is habitable again/spend a week chipping wax of the kitchen table/don't sit on auntie Maud's white ermine sofa routine. These things are more work.

Secondly I expect to be dry. The first thing I did when I switched to Goretex (early stages of Toura**** syndrome) in the late HHhhhmmmm's, was to bin my rain suit. I used to ride in the waxed jacket and leather trousers until I either got where I was going or found a convienient spot to put the PVC on. I could ride hundreds of miles without the PVC trousers, but PVC is very very easy to dry compared to treated leather trousers. My expectations of Goretex were dashed in Norway, 3000 miles wearing bin bags and cut up marigolds UNDER the jacket and trousers to keep dry. There were two factors at play, the outer getting dirty (tends to happen on dirt roads) and fashion over function collar and cuff designs. I ended up with a PVC one piece oversuit which while 100% effective is a PITA to put on, find your wallet in, can't be worn off the bike without cooking you etc. etc.

Unlike Horrible Gherkin, Drizabone know how to design a collar and cuffs and sat on an outfit the leg bit mean I can go all day in showers without resort to the  plastic. My plan for the summer is to combine the Belstaff type coat with kevlar jeans and have a shower proof set up for the odd ride to the coast. The one piece will be staying for days when it tips it down.

I guess I'm going to be easier to please than some here. The good news is that using the melt and paint or spray on stuff, wax cotton can IMHO get very close to that perfect kit where you can bin the rain suit.

To be fair, my aerstitch has been a good buy, I sent it stateside for repair and if washed and retreated once a year keeps me dry.

I must say that the wax cotton has a more romantic appeal.

Good enough review for me, just ordered one.

My chequered flag version arrived on Saturday so only done a few miles. Comments to date are:

It looks and feels like a hundred quid jacket, no dodgy stitching or bits that'll obviously drop off (unlike my last purchase from the Goretex people).

It's been treated, feels waxy/oily.

The sizing is the generous size of spot on. I'm a 41" chest so went for a large. Arm length is spot on but the collar is going to need a scarf/buff type thing to seal (I am not built like a Sontaran (and didn't the new daleks look very 80's, sorry, OT)  ;D). I'd bet a medium would have fit me but it is course better to have space underneath for a jumper. This is one of the few pieces of clothing I own where I'm using the shorter end of the hole options on the belt  :-X

So, happy so far.

I haven't complained to Claymore as I still would have the jacket and sort of half expected it to leak anyway. I intend to try treating it but am sooooo busy at the moment I just haven't got round to it.
To summarise, a great bit of kit supplied by a great little business.....Just don't expect it to keep you dry for long. ;D
That's weird Pat because I spoke to them today - I didn't mention your experience - but he assured me they are "100% waterproof."

All I can say is mine leaked after 15 minutes of wet riding. If your considering buying, ask him what guarantee he provides against leaks [ie full cash refund]. I will get round to proofing it one day, but in the mean time I'm back to carrying waterproofs.

Just received my budget £60 Cambell Cooper jacket, good torso fit, collar fastens a bit loose as do the cuffs.

Looks ok but been a long time since I had my Belstaff for comparison. No reinforced elbows or shoulders.

Just need it to rain now!

Andy, does the Drizabone have the leg straps on the jacket to stop them blowing open?

@Mark no you won't be HA, you'll just smell a bit worse (?)
