Well my jacket's arrived and I'm very pleased. The quality of the needlework is excellent and it feels like a solid, robust piece of kit. Can't say about the weatherproofing as I managed to dodge every shower today ::).

The other thing to mention is the service offered. Did have an issue with the collar being tight. Carl was a star. No hassle, no arguement, just sent the jacket back and he turned it around in under a week (the neck size is not a measurement you are asked for when ordering BTW). Even sewed on a club badge on the sleeve FOC. I ordered the mojave jacket, which is short and fitted and might not be to everyones liking. Can't say about the other styles other than I have no doubt about the quality.

Bring on the rain ;D

Obviously going to be a problem if you're built like a Sontarun.

Pat, could you give us an update on how the jacket is doing.

I'll be looking for something waxed cotton soon.

Wax cotton gimp mask, haven't seen one of those before. Does it work?. ;D

I would't have to fix my shed roof then, just let the gimp hang there in all weather.

Sorry guys I should have followed this one up.

Quality is superb, it's a well put together piece of kit that feels like it will last for years. Very comfy and quite warm and wind proof. I went for the shorter Mojave jacket which is a snug fit and has little room for jumpers, but never the less is ok with a thin(ish) fleece on underneath. The company are great to deal with and seem like really decent people. Only fly on an otherwise faultless picture is the jacket leaks like a sieve! On a 20 mile ride at 60mph in moderate rain, water comes in through the elbows, waist band and neck. Seems OK if I get caught in a brief shower, so It's one up on my old leather jacket, but it can't really be labelled as waterproof. I haven't complained to Claymore as I still would have the jacket and sort of half expected it to leak anyway. I intend to try treating it but am sooooo busy at the moment I just haven't got round to it.

To summarise, a great bit of kit supplied by a great little business.....Just don't expect it to keep you dry for long. ;D

Aye Pat,

That is disappointing! :( 'Nother fashion statement then! :-X Sorry, it's the curmudgeon in me!  ;)

Perhaps you might use some of this for a product test for us? Nikwax wax cotton proofer.
N.B. This is not the same as their Nikwax Cotton proofer!

Personally, I'd be tempted to go down the Waxoyl application route with a paint brush and then work in with a 'rubber' like French polishing! But won't give you the 'dry' finish and will leave marks on the cream leather 3-piece suite of the mother-in-law!!!!! ;D But you would stay dry for a bit and the odour in front of the warm camp fire theraputic. ;D

Toodle pip, Bill.

Wouldn't say this is a 'fashion item' Bill. The design is spot on for bikey application, just ain't waterproof. I did wonder if the leaks start with the stitching? Maybe the needle punctures might be a way in for the water (??) Thanks for the tip on nikwax BTW, that's the route I'll be going down when I get the time.

DIY Wax Cotton proofer mix is 10:1 Paraffin wax to Beeswax.  Melt down in a bain marie and mix together.  Apply, place garment above a hot radiatior or similar and consider re-proofing.

Works.

Or buy the Barbour product for a lot more money.

Ta Richard,

Used to use red deer fat from around the internal organs, that really works.

Beeman, do you have a recipe?

Have the seams been sealed?  If the garment is made from wax cotton rather than being made and ten waxed the needle holes and seams leak, they need sealing. A wax candle rubbed along them can work - but can leave a mess too.  Mind you get to go in some interesting shops looking for black wax candles.

That's a real shame about the leaking, I was very much considering a wax set for the winter as I'm sick of gore tex.

Sorry Pat.
I would have taken a far less relaxed view. Part of our problem is that we accept something which is not right and compromise. This jacket may look great but it's not fit for purpose. If you don't give Claymore feed back then how will they improve. I love the look of the Mojave jacket, but it would be Belstaff for me. Despite the cost it's clearly the better product. Yes we have all had waxed kit before. I used to treat mine once a year before the onset of winter. It was water proof. However as a new jacket I would have had a reasonable expectation that it would have worked.

As for the size, cut down on the pies and you will get some more kit on underneath.  ;D

Alternativley, pop to Steffans for instant weight loss. :D :D
