What a nice weekend
« on: April 20, 2009, 07:59:11 AM »
Apart from the niggle of having to clean graffiti from the rear doors of my van, that was a blinding weekend.

Saturday was spent with the family doing mundane little jobs around the place, including tarting up the Wasp sidecar that was due to be picked up Sunday lunchtime. Cooked up a monsterously tasty risotto for supper then settled down to watch a chick flick with Mrs Onepot, followed by the fantastic Korean horror/monster/comedy The Host. Well worth a look if it pops up on Film4 again.

Sunday was earmarked as another lounging day and the weather here was just lovely. At 11.30 the bloke arrived to pick up the Wasp, having driven down from near Dundee. Fortunately for our backs, Pat turned up with his son on his shinier-than-ever VX800. The three of us manhandled the chair into the bloke's massive LWB Sprinter van and the deal was concluded in an air of genial banter.

The bloke who bought the Wasp was, as you'd imagine, a dyed-in-the-wool sidecarrist and he had some good stories to tell. He has done the Elefant since '89 and, although he doesn't do the Dragon, him and his mates have their own North Wales winter camping meet near Beddgelert every year. The bike the chair will be going on is a BMW R100RS with LL forks and Smart car wheels. The previous owner had spent £6,000 converting it for chair use, ridden it briefly and then decided to sell it because he didn't enjoy three wheels. My buyer bought the Beemer for £1,200  :o

After the happy Scotsman's departure we sat down for coffee and a chinwag. After Pat and son roared off I wandered into my side garage to see the space left by the chair. For the first time in ages I have room to work in that garage without first having to move a bike out. Consquently I did more in stripping down a dead XBR I own than I have done in months.

This work was interrupted by the arrival of BJ and his son Jacob and I again retired to the garden to drink coffee, chat and watch the kids playing in the sunshine (that's something Joseph Fritzl could never say). Then it was back into the garage to finish off stripping the bike. With the bike sorted there's even more room to begin my GB500 rebuild with a view to selling it. Then I will move on to another XBR I own to rebuild that to sell. Then I wil repeat the process with a CG125 I bought last year. Each bike that goes will free up more space and I'm pretty pleased about that.

Laat night I sloped down the pub for an enjoyable couple of hours drinking beer and talking bollocks about motorcycles.

Well, ok, I didn't have a chair to flog, but in almost every other respect an identical weekend to GC (oh....and i don't have van with writin on it!.....although some kind sod ran a key down the volvo last week)
and the weekend started in excellent fashion with a half day track session at snetterton with Andy on Friday, the first run out for Andy on the new racer, it looks good, sounds good (too good for the scrutineers, who made andy SPEND MONEY on baffles for his empty cans before the decibel level became bearable) the usual niggles on a new tuned engine arose, mainly around carburation......played with the needles but just made it worse....anyway, i'm sure andy will be filing a full report soon.....but for a first run pretty good i'd say, no oil leaks...plenty of go when over 4k revs, sees off my track bike on the straight (which isn't geared for the longest straight in the country)....so...good luck with it Andy.

Getting towards the end of the school hols and I am contemplating infanticide etc...  ;D

Nowt to do with bikes, except cycling with the family along the cycle way from near our house up the valley - quiet enough for No1 son to ride on too.  Mind he did panic and fall off when we came around a corner and there was a forest rangers pickup parked - he thought it was moving and he did not know what to do.  Ranger was real nice to him, put his chain back on and chatted a bit about cycles to him.

Have been digging out the coachyard over the last few days - last owners (OK we have been here 11 years but I do not rush things) had dumped a load of soil etc in there and it floods when we get good rain - so digging back some way towards the proper level.  Mind what to do with all the spoil...

No1 and No2 son help in the way that only 7 YO and 3 YO can  ::)

Did actually step over a couple of motorbikes in the coach house to get to stuff, does that count?

Picked up an old copy of Motorcycle Sport (March 1972 - has a bit about CB350K4 and T500 in there) - what an interesting read, can see why they are not popular any more (magazine) pages and pages of words with more than one syllable and few pictures.  Mind it is a little repetitive in its writing.  Enjoy the adverts too mind - will for the basis of a posting here or maybe a bit of blurb for the mag.  It does remind me of the Wizard comics I have from the same period, a kids comic with two all text stories in it per week, of course modern magazines and comics are not dumbed down.

Have an insect day at school today - and being as No1 has only 4 limbs he is at home too so must go off to the mayhem and riots that are my home.

Pretty good overall, Saturday had friends round for dinner so I spent most of the day slaving over a hot stove (let the wife cook?  I think not!).  Good food, good company, copious quantities of 'enhanced' grape juice, a good time.

Sunday (once the e f f e c t s from the grape juice wore off) - number 1 son turns up with his fiancee, both carrying crash helmets.  I think he's regretting setting up in a flat with her as he c o u l d n't afford to keep his KLR250 - priorities, eh?  So he looks at Arfur the XBR, looks at me, looks at his skid lid, tries hard to look like Puss in the Shrek films ....... I point out that his licence keeps him below 33bhp until February, he points out that Arfur is so clapped out that he'd be lucky to make 33bhp at the wheel - c a n't argue with that!  A pleasant few miles passed under the wheels of Miss Whiplash and her baby brother and, yes we did swap rides occasionally - damned weird jumping off a high'n'wide Dominator straight onto a mean'n'squat XBR.  Only downside was following Arfur I spotted that the rear indic a t ors were having an intermittent issue - hence my mini rant on insulting tape.

So, a good weekend was had by all - but nothing like the cracking weekend had by the Admin of the Dundee Bikers Forum, as evidenced here:

Swear filter? Its creator must have been on acid. I'll swear if it knocks this out as well, but as far as I can see in the first couple of posts it removed "f l i c k", "c a r r i s t", "l i n k", and "a d a p t", as well as character combinations "c h  t", "c r u  t", "c  o  u n t" and "c o n  t". I suppose some of them have a resemblance to a certain word, but get a grip  ;)

And it didn't even censor "bloody" when you said it.

Regards
Richard

???  What; you let your family out of the cellar for exercise in the back yard? :o  Are we to infer that that is the only difference?;D

Hehehe, I was persuaded to take the family to an American Civil War Re-enactment do in Cheshire as participants.  Already got the appropriate tent, I knocked up a few period looking items, arranged to borrow uniforms, musket etc and away.  Bl**dy brilliant time was had.  Got to buy a musket now.

Interestingly most are Indian made pattern Enfields.

What is it about the Indians that they take things named Enfield and keep making them after the sell by date.  We will be going again.

Richard?

So what happened with the swear filter then? I look at the same posts now, and all the lines of asterisks have disappeared, revealing the orginal text.

Blimey , actually managed a bit of bike related activity .

Sent stator for the Rs off to Devon for a make over . I will update on the results . However , first contact with the chap doing the work was encouraging.

Took the carbs off the Bonnie ,to change main jets . Now here was a job designed by Satan himself . Not too bad , just plain awkward at times . Anyway job done Staurday night . Sunday morning saw an initial run which was a bit discouraging.Fell back onto four wheels and took the memsahib and little man to cafe for the morning . Rammed with bikes . Thumpers of note included a few Norton singles ,Furry Johns gorgeous Thruxton ,along with Molly's GB400.Usual Harley tractors abounded ,with corporate owners .

Anyway, made way to common for kite flying ,lack of wind {there's a first! }caused some issues regarding getting it up .Gave up ,had coffee. The after noon saw me pop out on the Bonnie and had a smashing ride around the local B roads and lanes . I will write this up properly when the RS is back
with us.
Failed to make the pub in the evening , er.........................., having gone there in theafternoon .
Bit jaded .

Rob .

Had the first BBQ of the season on Sunday and it was great ;D Back on the Cider too which helped.

Bikey wise, I fitted a little clear fly screen to Lucy along with some neat 'piston' bar ends. The Hagon progressive springs for the front end arrived Friday, but I'm holding off fitting until the Bonnie Scrambler gaiters arrive so i can do both jobs at once. According to those that know, progressives should sort out the somewhat soft feel of the suspension and I'm hoping for great things.

Had to test the new screen out for wind chatter, so #1 son and I headed off to cafe Carrick for coffee and a show-off. Got roped into a bit of manual labour, but not enough to warrant free bikkies (too be fair a sausage sarnie was on the menu, but declined)

Attended a memorial tennis tournament held in honour of a mate who tragically passed away too young. Nice to see a good turnout and great to come second.

All in all a brill weekend which just made going to work today seem that much grimmer. :'(
