Re-visited an old friend
« on: February 29, 2008, 08:48:24 PM »
Dug out my old Arai open face and wore it to work today. Why oh why did I stop using it??? Light, great visibility, comfy beyond all expectation, quiet and far less claustraphobic than the flip up full face I bought two years ago to replace it. Arrived beaming from ear to ear, the whole commute transformed by the joy of wearing such a fantastically well designed bit of kit.
Loved it soooo much I might wear it to bed tonight ;D

So that begs the question.......

What bit of old kit do you have that you just can't quite face letting go?

I've also got a pair of Alpinestar gloves that defy the bin. Worn through in places and leaking now, but just too cosy to throw out.

Funnily enough my 'can't-throw-away-item' is also a pair of AlpineStar gloves (as recommended by GC). They too are getting a bit worn and ripped but still waterproof. Was given a 'new' pair of those double-finger gloves by John Goode the other day that may, when the AP's finally fall apart, take their place!

I use an old Shoei helmet that's absolutely ancient. The lining's held in with gaffa tape but it's so comfy I can't part with it. I've still got a spare new visor for it in the cupboard (you can't get them any more) so I'm hoping I can keep it from dropping to bits before I get my moneys worth.  :)

My Alpinestar Goretex gloves were the most comfortable gloves I'd ever owned and I held on to them for way longer than I should have. In the end the goretex lining gave up and with all the holes in the outer they were obviously no use any more. Although I'm not sure I've actually thrown them out yet.  ::)

My Dainese Anchorage jacket has seen 12 years hard service and survived two nasty accidents. I got fed up with it about five years ago and hung it in my garage where it started to get a bit mouldy. I dug it out and cleaned it off in a moment of guilt and I've been wearing it ever since. It's still waterproof, very warm and strangely, despite it being a bit big for me when I bought it, it seems to have shrunk to fit me perfectly.

I've still got a 13 year old Arai Quantum lid that I wore a lot this winter, but I'm back in the nasty cheap open face again now.

My Arai open face (same as Pat's) is still the best lid I've ever owned. I'm on my second now and the combination of light weight, great visor and superb visibility ("am I wearing a helmet?") makes it my favourite. For this reason I don't wear it day to day as I'm on and off the bike all day and my helmets get ruined if I wear them for work. I save it for rallies and rideouts.

My most impractical item that I won't get rid off is my Aero Leathers reproduction Irving flying jacket. It's fairly useless as a bike jacket (no pockets for a start), but I love it.

Cheers

Its a bit scarey when I wonder past the Davida stand at a show and the fella looks at me and says
"Classic Jet,Black with a Yellow Stripe and 5 Stud Fixing !"

I'm on my fourth,so you could say it is one of my favourite bits of kit.
