I am always mindful (well I try to be) Steffan
The long suffering

Well there's a turn up for the books! I didn't realise you were a buddhist Steffan! Don't worry about the suffering bit, best just to do some more meditation and try to give up the desires that cause suffering  ;)

lol, ok briefly, the point of meditation is to become "mindful" (a word very commonly used in discussing buddhist meditation), and further Buddhists believe that (depending how you translate it) life is suffering, that suffering is caused by craving or earthly desires. Meditation is one method that can help you to clear your mind of the confusion and pointless thoughts and help you to become "mindful". Also help you to rid yourself of the aforementioned wants and thereby find peace and, ultimately, "awakening/enlightenment" (also subject to different translations! and allied to other things such as right speech, right actions etc)

Your turn of phrase reminded me of that so I decided to tease, being confident that you are not in fact Buddhist(!)
No offence intended!  ;)

Also my explanation is somewhat limited, so probably best to have a look at Wikipedia for a better brief explanation  :)

Think of it as being a little like radio 4... you learn some fascinating things but it's pot luck what the subject for discussion will be when you drop in  :D
Anyway, it's not off topic, it's conversation  ;)

Richard Bach wrote in Illusions that the greatest crime in the Universe is limiting the 'Is'.  I guess we should be proud rather than scared about the seemingly very large boundries to the 'is' there are here.

I very much doubt there are many forums that could move from discussing financial matters via the chairmans sexuality to religion without a fight breaking out. Well done gentlemen  :)

Now, did anyone see the Rugby on Saturday......... ;D

Ah but I was using it in the Platonic sense. Contemplation as being. Elevation of the Nous to a state beyond reason as intellection until one attains true contemplation that is participation in the one/good/true/beautiful

For explanation see Plotinus' Enneads 6.9 On the Nature of the Good and the One. Or Plato's Republic simile of the sun and the cave and the divided line.

Absolutely none taken  ;D

There is some dispute as to whether Buddhism is a religion proper and not more of philosophy. Come to that there is considerable discussion as to how one ought to define a religion. Whilst on the subject wasn't it Hume who said that one should not confuse an ought with an is?

;D there is no way I'm falling into a discussion about theology with an expert!  :o

As to whether Buddhism is a religion or a philosophy, I think it depends on where you look, go to Samye Ling and have a look there and you'd probably say it's a religion, speak to some other (mainly Western) practicioners and you'd call it a philosophy. Hard to say which is right.. maybe both?

As to the rugby, yes I saw Saturday and Sunday... Saturday, well done Wales great play. Sunday, scrappy and full of errors but the French deserved it.  ;)

Oh yes, wasn't it marvelous to see the glorious England squad heroically wrestle another stunning defeat from the jaws of victory!!   ??? ( yes I'll admit Wales deserved the win)

re Buddism........I'm more of a taoist myself...or at least I try to be ( but not too hard of course..)
