fmx650 engine into rs frame
« on: March 23, 2016, 09:59:07 AM »
Ay up chaps.

I have swapped my Bro my xbr500 engine, which was half way into my rs, for his recently aquired fmx engine. Pete, hopefully you are cool with this. The fmx engine has a more modern appearance which didn't quite gel with the cafe racer look mick is after, plus there are technical questions arising, hence this post. Gordon (the rs) is already highly modded so a few more technical hurdles won't hurt!

My first question is regarding the oil pump circuit. I'm wanting to make a special oil tank to go under the seat but positionally more like a traditional brit bike. How will this affect the oil pump, given that the fmx has a higher oil tank?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

No sweat Michael, a 650 engine in the RS frame sounds like a recipe for fun to me! If you PM me your email address, I'll send you a PDF of the SLR650 manual I have. On pages 2.0 and 2.1 it has two good diagrams of the oil circuit. The take off out of the frame oil tank down to the oil pump is below seat height anyway IIRC.

Manual sent!

Sorry about mixing names up in last post - I've reached an age where I have a job to remember who it is looking back at me from the mirror when I have a shave....  ???

My solution was to stop shaving. Mind you I did that when I was but a callow youth. Just think of the time I've saved in my lifetime.....

Hi Pete. Yes I had a look at the fmx engine slotted into the rs frame on Tuesday evening and I must admit it does look better than the XBR one that was in there originally, like Andy says it seems to lend itself to the more "modern" look of the fmx engine. Defo going to be an interesting project that's for sure, and yes I also think it shud be a recipe for fun....luckily I shud hopefully be able to swing a leg over it once it's complete and take it for a spin...cheers, Michael

Pete, thanks again for the pdf doc. I had a chance to peruse it this morning. As you say, the oil inlet hose takes off from the tank very low down anyway, so I should  find that a tank between where the xbr one sits and the seat should be about the same height.

Next question to all: what stops the system from wet sumping? There is a device labeled "check valve" but where it is situated it looks more like a relief valve to me.

Cheers
