Next question to all: what stops the system from wet sumping? There is a device labeled "check valve" but where it is situated it looks more like a relief valve to me.

If you look at the diagram on page 2.0 of the workshop manual, it does seem to have the check valve (which I would interpret as non-return valve) in the feed circuit although it looks slightly different in the pic on p 2.1

Yip that's the one I meant. Is it really a check valve or is it a relief valve? Looks more like it might be a relief valve to me, but I'm surmising.

Hard to tell.

Being used to Norton twins and the like which are quite capable of dropping a litre of oil into the crankcase over a weekend, I must say the SLR seems very good in that respect. Maybe trochoidal pumps are better at keeping the oil where it belongs than gear pumps?

Mmm possibly. Certainly modern tolerances and surface finish are likely to be better, but that's countered by generally lower viscosity oil I guess?

A better explanation is simply that I'm wrong and this is a check valve after all.  :) the circuit is starting to make sense to me now I think. My bro Moto 63 has an xbr in pieces I think. Might get a chance to take a closer look. I'm not stripping the fmx motor. It looks in very good nick.

Someone on here will know for sure.

Yes looking real good. However still think it'd look even better with a scantily clad lady draped all over it ;) ;) ;)

Wonder if rob's caught him yet? Wonder if Rob is still alive? Basseeel must be a fair size by now, judging by the several packets o biscuits he's run off with.  ;D I don't understand how he gets through that hole with a packet o chocolate digestives under each arm.  ;D

Yes it almost looks factory built, not odd at all.

Cheers. The project has morphed twice now. I originally got the bike with the intention of doing a flat tracker style. Then I found the subframe was twisted. Luckily whatever impact caused it hadn't done anything to the mainframe. So I launched the subframe, made the ally structure and Gordon was born. Then an opportunity to buy an xbr engine came up so I thought why not. That's when the idea of the up n over side plates came. They were originally a bit lower and sleeker than what you see there as I had removed the leccy start assy. Then the fmx engine came up as a swap with my bro and the sideplates had to be amended, to miss the leccy start assy. They are only mdf at the moment but will be 16mm ally plate soon. I'm going to re make the upper side plates to run them down and into the lower ones, all bolted up strong. The original ally structure I did had two struts, which are not needed now. Much sleeker.

On an XBR the oil pipes come up out of the tank and then down to the engine. On racers with other frames/tanks wet sumping was often an issue.
