Shed.
« on: October 04, 2019, 06:51:00 PM »
Sort of Thumper related. ??? :-\

Just looking for recommendations. I`m looking to purchase a shed, probably metal to empty my garage in to? (5 bikes, tools, all kinds of $h1te)

I`ve searched the internet and all the ones I look at have VERY LOW door height and even the ridge height is low. Ideally I`d like something 8` wide and as long as possible. I was even looking in to joining two 8x8`s together? Can you guys recommend anywhere to purchase or what have you done to overcome if you`ve had a similar problem? (without selling anything  ;D )

Obviously if budget was no problem I could build something bespoke, but budget IS a problem so looking at no more than £1K

Thanks fellas. ;)

Aye Steve, in my experience metal and concrete structures have condensation problems and with the Islands salty atmosphere this just exacerbates the corrosion problem.  ???

Go and have a word with my former employer!  ;)  If Jimmy still working they might give you a staff discount!  ;)  Worth a try.

Here is the link to their website: Isle_of_Man_sawmill_St.Johns

Price list for sheds appears to be out of your price range!  :-[  Isle_of_Man_sawmill_price_list_2019

I am not sure about Planning Permission in the Island but your wish for something 2.4m - 3m wide appears to limit the length to ~5m!  :(  Bit tight for 5 bikes, plus useful accessories!

Could you get wood from the Balladoole recycling site?  This website might be worth an ADVERT in the Wanted tab: IsleofManUK_freecycle

Ring around some skip hire companies and see if the have skips of wood coming in from building site jobs. That is how I obtained a lot of the wood for my garage!  ;)

Finally, I suspect that going to B&Q in Spring Valley might prove the option you choose  ;)  Link: B&Q_sheds_10x8

Good health, Bill

Thanks for your input Bill, lots of valid points and good ideas.

I looked at St. Johns but the size I`d like for a wooden shed was over £3k  :o but not thought about Jimmy.

I was thinking of joining two 8x8 sheds together, giving me 8x16 but the door heights are ridiculously low, I think from memory they`re only around 6` to the ridge  :-\

I don't know about planning but I think I`m right in saying with it being a shed, which is not a permanent structure, planning doesn`t apply …. but I may be wrong?

I don't really have the spare time to physically build one due to other commitments  :(

Thanks again,
Steve.  :)

SD No. 0254/2012 [Taken from the IoM Government website 2019-10-05]

"Town and CountryPlanning (Permitted Development) Order 2012
SCHEDULE 1
PART 2 —OPERATIONS WITHIN THE CURTILAGE OF A DWELLINGHOUSE
Section AGeneral Conditions (1) No   part   of   the   development  may be constructed within 9 metres (measured at ground  level) of  the route of any  overhead electrical line carrying 11kv or more (High Tension power cable);
(2) No part of the development may be constructed within 9.1 metres of the bank  of  any  river  designated  as  a  Main  River  under  the  Land  Drainage Acts;(3)The  construction  (including  foundations)  must  not  involve  the  felling, lopping or limbing of any tree (other than a tree referred to in section 3(3) of  the  Tree  Preservation  Act  199315)  or  interfere  with  the  root  system  of any such tree.
Class 15 Garden sheds and summer-houses
The  erection  of one  or  more garden sheds or  summer-houseswithin  the curtilage of a dwellinghouse. Conditions: (a) the general conditions applicable to Section A; (b) the  height of  the garden shed or summer-house must not exceed 2.8 metres above ground level; (c) the area of ground covered by the garden shedor summer-house must not cumulatively exceed 15 square metres in total; and (d) no part of the garden shed or summer-house maybe nearer to any highway which bounds the curtilage of the dwellinghouse than —(i) that part of the dwellinghouse nearest to that highway, or (ii) 20 metres, whichever is the nearer."

Saves expensive demolition costs and you can see why doors are often only 6' tall in these structures, so that they can comply with the overall maximum height of 2.4m (8')!

In my circumstances, I was replacing an old garage + two additional greenhouse structures with a single workshop on the same footprint, so didn't have to obtain planning permission, provided I didn't exceed the overall height of the previous garage, or finish the workshop in sky, blue with candy apple pink elephants!  ;)

Sorry that I cannot offer a building service. As for digging up useless or otherwise information, it was all part of the job when dealing with Land Tribunal cases in the forestry industry. Is the claim being made in the proposed 'work plan' actually practicable on the area of land for which it is proposed? Some people pay 'Consultants' a LOT of money for a bit of paper that you wouldn't use to wipe your ****!  ::) Thank you for your compliments.

Good health, Bill

Hi Bill,

that`s great info, I learn something new every day, thank you.  ;)
I`m now looking at building my own. I`ll just have to do it over a longer period of time than I was hoping. My plan is now to build 8ft wide x 16ft long, 7ft tall. This should comply with the regs you have just mentioned … if my maths is OK?  ??? :-\
I`m getting a price for metal cladding so basically build a box and clad it. Let`s see what prices come back.

Thanks again Bill,
Steve  :)

a grand would allow you to build something much nicer than you could buy. metal ones are really prone to condensation, i wouldnt bother. build a wooden one and insulate it.

Aye Johnr,

I would tend to agree, unless you can get your hands on some recycled, 50mm insulated, box profile sheeting.  ;)

There must be somebody recycling the stuff in IOM, from agricultural and industrial buildings. My neighbours have re-clad the whole of a WWII prefab bungalow with it, after sitting the bungalow frame on a 1.5m perimeter wall of 6" blocks. Great for storing 'Grey Fergies' and huge amounts of detritous! Useful items! ;)

Thanks fellas.

I think I have a plan  :o :P I`ve priced up a "shed load" of timber and some metal cladding. If my sums are right I THINK  :-\  ??? I can build a 16`x8` shed for about £1200 ?? I know it`s a lot of money but cheaper than a bought one. I`m going to over clad the ply with some metal sheets (green walls and red roof) It may end up looking like something Noddy has built but I`ll give it a bash  :-\ :-\ ;D

Aye Steve, looks good.  ;D  Are you going to go into competition in Ramsay with Tobermory harbour front on the Isle of Mull?   ;)

I have no idea what your price options are for the dimension of plywood you are planning on using, but you might find Oriented Strand Board (OSB) or Sterling Board might be cheaper and equally effective, especially with your metal cladding. If you can get any sort of insulation (glass wool, inert foam) to go between the sheets and the cladding, you will have a less condensation prone shed in the damp Manx climate.

All the best with the construction.

Regards, Bill

ok, heres a plan, im going to do something similar myself, so i put down a sturdy decking first for the base, then i bought one of them fixed bike barn shelters that covers the deck so i can park my bikes ans storee stuff under it for now, but can add to this at a later date by actually putting the shed over the top of it. im hoping to build a shed on mine soon, but want to put a green roof on top so it blends a bit more.
my problem is that im in dangeer of becoming a shed obsessive, ive already got three, on of hich is 30 foot by 12 and im contemplating more!

Nice one johnr, sounds like a mighty shed you have already! Cant have too much storage  ;) ;)

Yes Bill, multi-coloured  ;) It is actually OSB I`ve priced for @£17.50 plus 20% for an 8x4 3/4" sheet …. I need 19  :o :o :o
The cladding needed for walls and roof come to £620 inc. VAT and I`m calculating the timber around £200?

My plan too, is to build a 8x16 deck and build of it. I can see this going pear shaped  :o :o

The reason I`m doing it is to home the bikes and general storage as I need my garage for a car I`ve recently bought. Nothing exciting, 1978 VW Passat GLS, one owner from new, 33k miles with history. Been garaged all its life so zero rust and I`d like to keep it that way. Lovely tan velourrrrrr interior  ;D ;D
