I need an expert....on srx engine
« on: April 26, 2007, 09:01:22 PM »
Embedded in the bottom of the righthand crankcase cover is a ball and seal, the ball is spring loaded (i think)
as far as i can remember this is a non return assembly for the oil system, to stop oil draining into the crankcase when not running.
On the engine we are rebuilding the visible part of the seal is very tatty.

Now, as far as i'm concerned, this is of little importance, as the seal is for the ball to seal against (not visible) not to seal against the crankcase.....obviously if the seal is tatty on the inside then the ball wont seal properly and the crankcase will (eventually) get oil draining into it.

#1 Son, who is doing the rebuild, is panicking, and stopped all work until I can get a new seal! My opinion is that it is not required, and anyway, I CAN'T FIND IT on any parts list/diagram, so can only assume that it is part of the cover and can only be got as part of the whole cover (blummin expensive).....any ideas/part numbers/advice would be MOST welcome!

Aye Steve,

Diagram you require is on SteveH site: http://www.srx600.net/

In the Parts lists area on the oil pump sheet. Clearly shows oil pump, spring, ball, seal, crankcase in that order from right to left and the oil pick up on inner side of case.

Problem is that 'Parts List' part of the site isn't 'displaying' when selected. Looks like a coding glitch! :-( STEVEH!!!!!!!!!

I shall go and have a poke about in a spare case I may have to see what I can see.

However, my logic (!) would reckon that the outward facing lip of the seal against the ball needs to be good to prevent oil flowing from the pump back into the case via the pickup when not running.

May get back later the night!!!!

Toodle pip, Bill

Aye SteveL,

Further to previous missive!

Part numbers:

Spring, compression: 90501043EO
Ball: 9350308007
Seat, check ball: 5831311300

Have looked in dismantled motor and these bits are housed in the lower righthand side of the outer right crankcase cover!! Not in the right crankcase body as the diagram on the web site suggests.

When I rebuilt Sally the internal bonded seal on the end of the 'Seat, check ball', between it and the the mating surface of the main crankcase was in good nick. After holding ball down with screw driver and blowing through from inside to out of case to clear any sh1t with airline, applied lips to other side and blew to check ball was sealing against seat. All OK.Just applied a smear of black 'Gorilla snot' to ensure seal on re-assembly, yet not clog up the ball!!!!!!!!!

Would suggest you do same. If ball not sealing, then maybe after procuring new parts (XT600 maybe same numbers!) a self tapper screw of suitable diameter in through seat could be used to remove it, afore pressing new seat, using vice, into position with new ball and spring.

Also, by clearing 'popup' blocker I can read parts lists on SteveH site!! Numpty at the controls, nothing wrong with site!:-)

Hope this helps. Greene King LPA please! ;-)

Regards, Bill

Hey Bill!
I'm a pillock, i really am! I have  the microfiche here (and a printout of most of it) couldn't see it for looking, even shows the same part numbers !!, not sure the xt is the same, i have an xt engine in the garage, but minus the r/h cover, the internal machining of the crankcase is somewhat different.
Anyway, you're a bloody hero, will be ordering said parts today, (and a set for mine) also will be ordering 2 of the seal that runs onto the end of the crankshaft (also fitted into the r/h cover)

I'm an Abbot man myself, although Adnams Broadside is a wonderful tipple (shamefully, on tap it is only 5%, whereas bottled it is 6.5%!) but a pint of IPA it is then.....cheers mate

Aye Steve,

No pillock mate, your just getting hastled and require a little time to cogetate and allow the cognetive process to tickle a synaps or two! ;-)

I too am partial to an Abbot, but anything with more poke than about 5% starts getting like Barley Wine (Wee Heavies) up here. Refreshment, rather than a thick head these days, even though it might not be 'cool'!

Please would you view my post in the 'Bike Problems' bit? Just confirmation required for the 'Wee Minx'.

My regards, Bill

mmm yes, well, in general, i find beers less than 5% seem to lack that certain tast/bite, with the exception of maybe London Pride, this is probably down to my aging jaded palate!

my personal all time favourite is Pale Rider, a wonderfully balanced piece of craftsmanship at 5.2%. My srx goes SO much better on a pint of that!

Yes, saw your query in the problems section, and left a comment

cheers
