AFAIK Ian, the Mash 400 is the same bike. In fact, it's rumoured that Shineray, the Chinese manufacturers of the Mash actually made the Honda, but I don't know if that's true or not.

At all events, the engine is a sleeved down XBR unit with a conventional four valve non RFVC head, good for around 28bhp. Apart from the fact that they look really nice, that's the sum of my knowledge I'm afraid.

I have a CB400SS.  It's similar to the Yamaha SR500 but with an electric starter.  The engine is closer to the XR400 than the XBR500 and my bike has the XR400 camshaft and piston fitted which lifts the power up a little.  There is a yahoo forum for the CB400SS, (I started it), and if you sign up there is more info including a workshop manual (only in Japanese), wiring diagrams etc.

Anything in particular you would like to know?

Hello GrahamH and thank you for taking the time to reply. I'm looking at purchasing one is the main reason for the thread. I knew there were people on here that have or still owned one. Toss up between a nearly new SR400 or the CB400SS. I know parts are readily available for the Yamaha with them having officially imported them for a couple of years from 2014 but don't really know the spares position for the Honda. Perhaps you could shed some light on the situation.
Cheers
Ian

The CB400SS engine is virtually the same as the XR400 but with a softer cam and piston. The XR400 workshop manual is very useful and I can supply a copy of the Japanese workshop and rider's manuals.  The engine is also used in some Honda quad bikes, (the farmer's type machine).  David Silver can supply most any part for the bike or even webike from Japan are very good.  If you buy a CB400SS check how old the tires are, it seems many are advertised with the original tyres which are probably over 12 years old now.  I fitted Bridgestone BT45 which suit it very well.

I have done quite a lot of work on my bike to improve it whilst keeping it looking as standard,....SS exhaust, alloy rims, lots of aluminium parts to replace cheap steel, air pump etc junked.   I guess I have probably taken about 30 lbs off the weight.  If you are anywhere near Halifax you are welcome to have a look at it...........it could even be for sale.
