Hi, anything to look out for on the Suzuki savage motors ?  I am going to look at a 400 so any common problems you can highlight for me are welcome,  ta

No knowledge, I'm afraid, but I've always thought it  to be a good looking lump. I'm sure there's an owners club/forum. Best of luck and I for one would be interested to hear how you get on.

I went to see it, apparently the 650 has a starter problem sometimes due to some sort of decompressor ? but the 400 doesn`t suffer due to having lower compression and no `device`  or so the seller said, otherwise it`s quite nice, I was hoping to swap my gn400 for it but he wasn`t bothered, he would have one of my gn250`s but I won`t part with them, so I have hastily advertised the gn400 to see if i can sell it before he sells the savage.. the 400 has a chain drive as opposed to the 650`s belt.

update...            looks like i will be getting it, he seems keen on a deal, but I can`t find much info regarding spares suppliers, someone on here must have one (i hope)

My daughter had an LS 650 years ago and that lost a few teeth from the large starter gear. The only other thing I remember was when the cam chain wears to it's limit, the tensioner falls out, we didn't have the problem, I was just aware of the issue.
I get Suzuki DR BIG parts from Robinsons Foundry....if you need to contact them, tell them you are on the DR BIG forum and ask for BIG BOB's 10% discount. I even get it on Guzzi parts.
Dave.

Aye Rufus,

Link to 'alternative' Savage LS650 images!  :-\

The lower back pain with those handlebars and forward footrest position. Bit like a Ducati MKIII single with clip-ons and standard foot-rests!  ::)

Maybe that's why they took it to an old quarry to do the photo shoot, happen they were hoping it was "blast day" and that a great boulder might just fall on it 🤣🤣🤘

Always had a sneaking regard for the Savage Rufus - all the best with your new purchase and the electric start should be welcome. As far as I know it shares the engine with the retro Suzuki Tempter 400 which I'm also a fan of. A company in America called Ryca does some lovely conversion kits for the Savage, particularly the Scrambler and Tracker which look like they should weigh very little. Ditching the belt drive and converting to chain on the 650 version seems a popular mod, giving an opportunity to alter the gearing.

Finally got my first legal and therefore longer ride on the LS400, it does go very well, nice and comfortable for those of us in the shorter stature category, it seems to have a highish 5th gear and sits nicely at 70 with more available (but not much) . Only problem so far is the throttle adjusting screw snapped off when i tried to get it to idle a bit quicker, replacing it will be a carb off job, that can wait, i will just blip the throttle , it`s better when the motor is warmed right up   :)
