We've all done it, haven't we?
« on: January 28, 2019, 01:20:13 PM »
Spent the 4 hours I have on a Sunday, working on my front tank mounts, where tolerances are tighter than a tight thing on a cold day - my fault for putting a tank on with a slimmer neck. Slow progress, got fed up and wished I'd left well alone - projects, eh?!
Like a fool, I went on eBay and am now tortured by this beauty which, only last year, I could have afforded to bid on. And, yes, I have it on watch, just to confirm my masochistic tendencies!

funny thing that.... i had a look at that too,..... just curiosity you understand.. :),  often wondered what the japanese 'triumph' went like, you know.... no oil leaks, electrics that work, reliable, ....get home after a jaunt with clean hands and no oil on your leathers ... i mean... where's the fun in that ??  :D

I used to own one in standard trim.Bought it after i sold my Enfield EFI. It looked lovely ,did everything it should very well -had no faults at all-except it lacked character. And that's coming from someone who's mainly had Jap bikes.I moved it on after about 10 months-swapping it for a modern V7 Guzzi (new owned by Moto 63)- a much more characterful machine indeed. In fact i'm still missing the V7!

Gutting to hear this! Any mods that might induce a bit of character, or do you think it's a lost cause?

I wondered whether a set of pipes might release a bit of character that is so sadly missing? Possibly change the inlet side as well as the W650 is carbed if i remember correctly?

Ancient Chinese proverb that I live by says 'man who want character in garage needs reliability on wet country road at 4am'.

I understand entirely the character stuff (after all I ride an Enfield when I have had F650s, SLR 650s and an SR400 in the past) but don't underestimate the power of the first time start and the 50000 miles between rebuilds. I suppose though I'm thinking of the old excuses we used to use for riding old Brit clunkers rather than converting to 'Jap crap'.

I suppose at some stage we've all taken the 'jap-crap' attitude.....
i know i did, without ever having ridden or worked on anything from the land of the rising sun.
until... in 1970, a mate told me he had just slung his bike in the hedge as it kept seizing up, and he'd had enough of it.
well, i'm for any bike if it's free !, and whats so difficult about a seizing 50cc 2 stroke ?
it took me 2 months to trace the problem (no doubt a competent engineer would have taken 2 days)
but in that time i got to know every nut and bolt on that little Yamaha YF1 (bit like a fizzie, without the pedals).
problem was, someone had mucked about with the float & needle, consequently the fuel level in the bowl was JUST enough to fire it up, but far too weak a mixture and consequent overheating.
once sorted i treated it to a new barrel & piston.... and what a fantastic piece of machinery it was, disc valve induction, beautifully engineered... i commuted 40 miles a day for 5 years (sometimes 2 up !) and never let me down once.....
been a big fan ever since.

All bikes have their merits don't they.I know there are a few MZ fans on here and some of their early models were weird on the styling front. Anyone remember the front brake conversion off the CB250 Honda on them?
Had a few Yammies in my time:Fizzy ,RD200 ,RD250, RD400, LC250 ,DT175,XS1100 , Thundercat, Fazer 600 and 1000 -all good bikes in their way.

I love the uniqueness of the Guzzi V twins.

Used to love my C15 and RE Crusader in spite of the oil leaks and reliability issues.

Sorry-in my old age i seem to be going off topic somewhat.

Always fancied a Guzzi since I was little, the 850 Lemon. If you were trying to sell me a Guzzi V7, what would your pitch be?
