ES2 progress

It's starting to look much better:







Starting and running well thanks to fitting a 3.5 cutaway rather then the specified 4. I suspect the original was for economy rather than performance.

Still a few jobs to get it on the road so I can assess what needs to be done over the winter apart from cosmetics. But so far I'm pleased with progress.

Somebody has nicked your dynamo and battery.
I had a Featherbedded ES2 many moons ago and built a crankshaft with extended drive shaft to take a magnet / coil for lighting and kept the mag. One of the smoothest bike to ride I have ever had.

Yes, very nice. Looks clean and tidy, but not over done, and therefore something you can ride rather than sit and look at!

Those of us who went on the camping weekend last weekend saw a lovely featherbed ES2 parked up by the Ship Inn in Highley. It looked absolutely mint though, and I'd be scared to ride it. Wish I'd taken a piccie now....

I will be doing some sensitive re-enamelling and probably get some chroming done but won't go overboard. The top end is a bit rattly so I suspect rocker bushes / valve guides. It has excellent compression, no nasty knocks or rumbles from the bottom end and doesn't smoke so I'm not expecting to find any horrors inside although who knows? Four of the roacker cover bolts have had metric allen screws used so they will need helicoiling as a minimum......

Just taken the Norton out for its first road test - about 4 miles on local roads. I was very pleasantly surprised. Loads of power, no coughing or spluttering, slick gear change, rock-steady handling. Brakes pretty poor, clutch dragging a bit but otherwise very happy.

I only took it to 50 (suburban roads) but there was loads left......

Aye Ian,

Now you are starting to wind me up!  ;)

Having been followed by Propeller on his Enfield, with little in the exhaust, the 'Bop' of a long stroke single is certainly musical. As for the 'brakes', well, anticipation, the gearbox and maybe a little shoe leather should sort that out, but can't account for current myopic, IT distracted, nincompoops, using other vehicles.

With a bit of fettling it sounds as though it will be a realy enjoyable bike to get out and about on.

Although a very short hop it was much more fun than the V50. Even felt faster!

I did 20 trouble free miles after doing the video, and the Norton cracked along in a very satisfying manner. The plunger suspension actually works very well although I suspect it may be overwhelmed by a deep pothole......
