Honda cb250rs front brake
« on: June 05, 2018, 08:39:53 PM »
Hi all, I've just bought a 250 rs but the front brake is crap. Does anyone have any ideas about a better caliper that might fit ? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Aye Gavadava,

Some 'handle' that!  ;)

As for your request for info. about improving your CB250RS front brake. If you select the "Bike Problems/ Questions" board on the forum and then paste "CB250RS Front Brake" into the 'Search' box in the top right-hand of the screen page, you should be able to select a thread from 2014, using Honda Dream parts that was recommended at the time.  :)

Having never owned one of these wee whizzers, I cannot offer any first hand experience, but hope this helps you in your quest for some brakes.

Xbally may also come online and be able to give you first-hand experience chapter and verse.  :)

My regards, Bill

Hey Bill, just seen this post!I have run the original Honda set up and even with the standard rubber hose provided the hydraulics are bled properly mine works quite well. Obviously you need to check that all is well and the piston is free and pads have lots of meat left on them / seals grooves all clean and pads  are not contaminated in any way. I don't profess to be any sort of expert on setting things up but the standard system can and does work ok for me. One thing i would say however is it depends on what you are used to. Don't forget 80's brakes ,while being better than 70's ones but not as good as 90's onwards brakes will never compare with a modern set up.I'm fairly confident that with the light weight of the RS my bike will pull up fairly smartly on most reasonable surfaces and with little risk of a lock up and resultant slide /loss of control. So Gavadava try to get the standard kit working correctly -maybe with a good quality braided hose but if you are looking for a more modern set up i can't help i'm afraid. I always liked the blue spot calipers Yamaha fitted to their bikes from the Mid to late 90's and i'm sure a good bike engineer could recommend / fabricate an upgrade. I'm also sure there are better qualified experts on this forum who might be able to offer practical advice on an upgrade.

Spot on thinking Martin.

I dunno if the caliper is a sliding pin type (I can't remember!) but suspect it is. From observation, this type rely on everything being right to achieve maximum efficiency of converting the effort applied to the lever into pressure applied to the disc surface. Worn disc, steps in the pins from wear, dry and dirty surfaces etc all rob precious force, wasting effort in overcoming friction and acting to distort the assembly instead of pressing the pads onto the disc. In tip top condition you can double the efficiency of a worn/dirty assembly. This is before we start think about old hoses, old fluid etc.

Nightmare city !!

The joys of owning bikes that have been around the block a few times. 😂😂😂

By turns frustrating and rewarding.

Definition of expert.

X is the unknown quantity. Spurt is a drip under pressure.

On those grounds, I'm qualified 😂😂😂

thanks all and apologies for the incredibly slow response time. Yes, as suggested the brake is perfectly ok once rebuilt. Its a nice little runabout, cheers again.
