Bloody Bike Insurance
« on: May 18, 2018, 05:06:05 PM »
The usual insurers (Wicked Quotes/Ramasis) have upped their quote by more than I was comfortable with so I went shopping.

Footman James - very disappointing and difficult telephone experience with a pleasant but confused call taker. I work shifts for the emergency services and on that basis - as they may not be in a locked garage overnight if I am at work and travelling on one - they wouldn't be covered. Utterly useless.

Carole Nash were very expensive, but automatically include extras I already get like legal insurance and breakdown. I get that for very little extra via work and won't pay for it twice !

Bennets don't think one of my MZs exists !

Tomorrow I shall try Peter James and a few others.

I HATE having to get private insurance to use public roads.

This is getting so it belongs in rants.

Aye Richard,

Are you in CSMA? If so try LV.

I use them for the car, house and the bikes. Sally the 1987 SRX 600, with mods, is currently £38 per annum fully comp, with another named rider (my wife), No Claims Bonus protection, 6,000 miles per annum, home to work journey, but not for business use. However, your circumstances will be different, but I still think they are worth a try.

N.B. I cannot get anything cheaper for the car or the house and contents either!

My regards, Bill

I've never thought of using LV= for the bike but do for both our cars and have been very happy with prices and (for the one claim my wife made) prompt service on that.

I still like Peter James however and for around £90 for the Guzzi and Norton - both agreed value with a total of £8,500 - they're good premiums. They are however a bit tricky for modern bikes.

I agree with both your points re private companies and compulsory breakdown etc. I've long believed that 3rd party insurance should be state provided and paid for by a levy on fuel. But of course the daily mail and clarkson wouldn't accept that.

Thanks Bill, but I'm not in the CSMA - wrong job !

Devitts won't recognise the MZ ETZ at all and won't insure it.

Footman James were the biggest disappointment in that as I work for the emergency services I don't alway sgarage the bike at night - I use it to go to work - so won't cover me.

Grrr.

And Peter James aren't open when I'm home this week.

Defintely Peter James the last few years for me, but a lot easier if all your bikes are over twenty years old, and you are in a recognised club.

I believe PJ's cut off is 15 years not 20 and they do seem rather haphazard in how they apply it.....

Peter James weren't interested as I can't be arsed to put each bike in a garage every night.

I use Motorcycle Direct - they're one of the few that will cover me for bike training as well as personal use. For the most part they have been pretty good. Worth a try ?

I've just had a renewal quote from Bennetts for the F650 I gave my son very recently and they wanted £100 more than last year! A hundred bloody quid price rise!! I rang them and had a little fun with the phonebot at the other end of the line. I told him that if he wanted me to answer any questions I would have to charge him £20 admin fee for each answer, he said ok. When he had asked me 6 questions I told him I would be claiming £120 from Bennetts and as he had said ok it was a binding contract and the call was being taped so I had proof. Ever heard the sound of someone shitting themselves over the phone? Anyway at that point my wife told me off and said I had to stop playing with the poor boy.

Needless to say Bennetts won't be getting anymore business from me.

Why do we have to put up with blatant profiteering from a corrupt industry?

Because we have a stupid law that hands power to private companies. Can you imagine a law that required every person in the country to buy a can of beans from a large supermarket every week? Or one that said you had to get a builder round to inspect your house once a year and gave him the power to evict you until you paid for the repairs he says you need?

If the government want us to have 3rd party insurance and MOT's they should be the supplier, then we'd get to elect the people who set the prices. Its the Australian Rego system.

Very well said, I try a version of the 'you are being charged' thing with cold callers.

Australia and East Germany found similar answers for basic insurance, then if you want more private insurance fine.

Just had to do a change of vehicle on my bike Insurance with a company in the South East where a famous Battle took place in 1066.

I had to put the phone down for the first attempt otherwise I think I would have had a heart attack!

2nd attempt was much better but still tenuous....

I thought it was illegal to ask someones age now...Age Dicrimination Act and all that
