Renewing Old Style Paper Driving Licence
« on: February 22, 2018, 12:16:24 PM »
I have got to apply for a new style photo driving licence due to a change of address. I seem to recall some years ago the DVLA were returning applications WITHOUT the entitlement to a motor cycle licence and people were having to apply for a new licence as if they were a new rider. Has anyone applied to replace their paper licence with a photo driving licence recently and are their any steps you can take to make sure you retain your motor cycle licence please?

If I were you, I'd keep the old paper licence and tell the DVLA you've lost it in the move, and need a replacement. That way you'll have some proof if they mess you around. that's what I did when I made the change anyway, though fortunately, they got my plastic licence right anyway.

There was a period when this seemed to be happening but haven't heard of it recently.

Do you mean you still have a pre-photocard licence? I thought they'd all been done away with decades ago.

If you mean the paper counterpart, this has also been abolished.

But as Pete says I would pretend you've lost it to get the replacement.

Thanks for replies....Yes Ian, the old pink paper version (not the counterpart) which can i understand still be used as long as all the details on are correct.

I'd imagine both of you would struggle if you ventured across the Channel with them....

As I recall, even if you took a photocopy of your old licence with you entitlement the DVLA wouldn't accept it. The best way was to 'lose'
your old licence and request a replacement and if you have any trouble then you can 'find' your old licence again.

i lost mine in our house move and then found it again after the new one came, but the new one was fine anyway, all thee correct categories on it.
you can even renew theem online now if you have a valid passport, you simply apply and they use the verified pic from your passport for your new photocard licence.
