2002 BMW 650CS
« on: January 07, 2018, 12:55:56 PM »
I know there are BM owners on here but can`t remember who? There`s a BMW 650CS for sale locally. I think it`s done 35,000mls. I`ve been looking on the internet to find out more about their engines, but can`t seem to find a lot.

It`s obviously a 650 single, liquid cooled. Does anyone know much about them? Are they a good engine? Do they have cambelts or chains? etc?

Thanks fellas.

Steve.

Water cooled Rotax. Has Twin OHC on a chain with a fairly simple adjuster IIRC. Just an FI F650 GS/Dakar in road trim with a belt drive.

The waterpump seals are a known source of problems as are voltage regulators. Pretty efficient for their day, but nothing to write home about compared to more modern stuff. The engine cases rot. 48HP so will do anything quite well. The fuel tank under the seat limits some luggage options but you get a rack on the tank. The battery is in a mental place under the faux tank and its almost easier to take the engine out than work your way in from the top.

Worth less than an equivalent Honda or Kawasaki IMHO but decent enough if the price is right and its what you are looking for.

I've got the F650 Funduro version and pretty much agree with what Andy says except for the crankcases rotting, never heard of that. There was a Dutch guy called Ton on one at the Thumper Club rally in 2017, he'd been all over on his and was very happy with it.

Thanks Andy and Ian.

I like stuff that`s a little different and the BMW seems to be that? I`ve been looking at them this afternoon of internet, they seem pretty good and not too many negative points apart from what you fella`s have mentioned. I`ll have a look at the one over here, they do say it needs "cleaning up" ... whatever that is? Don't like the big hole in the top of the dummy tank if there bag`s not there? Not the end of the world though, I could always buy a bag  ;) ;) ;)

If you can't find a bag on ebay maybe Motorworks could help.

Yes Ton has done a fair mileage on his. The only Dutch guy I've ever met who doesn't speak English, so its obviously a generational thing, as he's an older guy. Top man, came to Bishops Castle last year. I looked at these beemers when they came out. Not to buy, just out of interest. Dealer told me they need a new belt every 12k at 200 sheets a pop!  😀

:o :o :o :o wow, the seller`s not got back to me yet, so the BM may not even be a contender. Going to look at the RS that's been in storage for years, in about two hours. It`s either going to be ace or a pile of $hi7e? We`ll see??

Aye Steve,

Had a 'Funday', '94 model, corroding crankcases, wheel rims, fork sliders, in fact any alloy and any alloy that had been powder coated and salt had got beneath was diabolical. The fasteners holding the body work were all stainless steel, allen screw with large heads, really good. BUT, the steel strip body clip into which they were threaded was untreated apart from a light 'blackening' treatment, so the whole assembly rusted solid and then spun when trying to remove the allen screw! >:( >:( >:(

The motor ran well, but seized exhaust studs, a blowing exhaust, along with the general deliquescing of the alloy meant that it had to go. Shame, as it was a good going bit of kit.

Regards, Bill

Sounds a nightmare Bill!!

I`ve still not heard from them anyway, so I`d say the BMW`s a no go?

Went to look at the one owner RS. Been is storage 15yrs ..... in a damp, rotten old wooden shed. Needless to say, the poor little bike is not in a good way, but all original and 20k on the clock. He is selling it on behalf of his 80yr old father but sadly want far to much money for it in the condition it`s in. I did throw him an offer but he`s pretty sure his father wont accept it. Shame to see such an honest little bike rusting away  >:(  :( :(

Yes, people often overestimate "value", egged on by the glossies. His dad will probably die before it's sold then it will go for pennies.

Agreed Ian,

20 years ago I knew of a CB250RS with less than 20K on the clock that was for sale. Trouble was it had sat in a damp stone shed on an earth floor for 5 years and had not been covered or had the salt washed off after the last commute on Highland roads!  ::)

Both wheel rims were corroded thin, spokes red and tyres perished; fork sliders, engine furry, pitted stanchions + other rust on all the chrome and the speedo glass was broken!  Asking price was £300, I thought £100 was 'nough. Needless to say I didn't purchase it and 15 years ago it was still sitting in the shed, I didn't even bother to ask.

Steve, best left unless £150 max I might suggest.

However, I am not immune from have a blood rush to the heed, a certain SRX 600 mono comes to mind!  ::)

My regards, Bill
