Trackers at Thumper Tech level

The wifes old mobile, hidden on the bike with a tracker app installed

I played with a GPS tracker before. Without a screen it was a pig to get working. It also failed after a few months as the electronics were hobby level, while Samsung tend to do better.

Up to you how you use it. Find thieving scum or let the wife know how far away you are. It costs 1 text per "ping".

Good idea. I wonder whether you could arrange it with some sort of motion detector so it was normally switched off but could be switched on when it moves?

I do have a surplus "smart" phone lying about which may be worth experimenting with.

The app wakes up if anyone messes with the phone pin. You can wake up a turned off phone from the one in your pocket. No geofence function I can find though.
