jeans
« on: March 24, 2017, 04:17:44 PM »
i am thinking about getting some denim protective jeans, draggin/shoshoni/aldi /red road etc, probably second hand cos i don`t like the new price, but  aldi have some in their offers next week for about £40, does anyone wear them ? any comments about them for and against ?
i want something to wear when riding my super power 50 when i go shopping, leathers are a bit of overkill but i still want some protection..

I've not tried the Aldi ones, but I wear some cheapo ebay special riding jeans for summer commuting duties. They may not be up to a 100mph spill, but for the 30 - 40 mph commute I guess they'll be OK. Only had one off with them so far, and I rolled rather than slid from about 25mph and they were unmarked. Got to be better than the old Brutus and Levis we all used to wear back in the day anyway  ;)

I have some Hood jeans for summer and they are really good. Just be aware that they can get a bit hot in really hot weather as the kevlar/arimide lining doesn't breath.

Can't comment on the Aldi jeans, but I bought some Lidl padded overtrousers a few years ago and they have been really good - only £40 at the time less than half the price of the cheapest known brand . They also had all the right labels - Goretex, scotchbright reflective, 500 denier. They have been really good better than the expensive pair they replaced and waterproof. I imagine Lidl and aldi probably both source from the same manufacturers.

interesting comments, i have heard from other people that the aldi ones are ok if you are tall(ish) and not shortish like what i am, as half ton says the armour/protection is possibly  too far down, just found some ebay ones in a shop in newcastle for £33, various sizes and includes knee inserts, i will go and have a look,  thanks all

Unless I swallowed a load of manufacturer's bs, I seem to remember that aramid fibres don't work well when wet. This pair if jeans claim to get around that problem;

I had a pair of Hood jeans for some years and had an off whilst wearing them.  They worked.

I recently bought another pair, but this time went for the lighter cargo trousers.  The size and fit is better than the denim.

To be honest I would buy Hood again quite happily, I find them cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter than leather.

I switched over to armoured jeans last year. Not sure of the make, but the seam at the crotch area came apart and I got them repaired. I must buy a decent pair, as they are great to wear, along with my preferred summer footwear, ex-army Meindl desert boots. Like wearing super soft hiking boots  :)

I've never really considered armoured jeans, the last time I came off I just used my knees to wear away the tarmac which didn't end well.

I think I will have a look around and see what's out there, seems silly to ignore them any longer.

I am glad spooky started this thread,After 44 yrs of riding I think this is a purchase I really must make this year,I've been putting it off far to long (tight git) and old skin and bones do seem to take an age to mend,And Richards mention of the cargo trousers, might be a better fit for me as I'm carrying a fair bit of cargo :'(...braces might help as well.. ;D

"Braces"  ;D

Absolutely the item of choice, to tight a fitting around the waste band and the old gurning guts + flatulence can rear its ugly head!  :(  Braces solve that problem beautifully.

As for the jeans, thought about it but wear the leathers, even for shopping and 'short runs', as they often turn into days out!  ;)

Out for a ride whilst the sun shines!  ;D

Just been to look at a Sanglas in Newcastle then went into `Proto` the motorcycle clothing shop, bought a pair of JTS armoured jeans, hip and knee removable armour and reinforced for abrasion,  £32,  the 32" waist fit just like a normal pair of jeans but i got 34" so i can get long johns on if i want, they seem very comfy and the armour is in the right place,  they have an ebay shop,

I've been wearing armoured jeans for year, not just for riding but work, all the time more or less. I buy in the under £50 category, Aussie Biker Wear, Turin, oh other names too, I forget which, I tned to look for the greatest kevlar coverage. I have never used the armour that comes with them, it's not practical for everyday wear I think but I like the extra protection from the layer of Kevlar. Fortunately I have yet to find out if the ones I buy work or not, naturally I do my best to avoid falling off and after all these years seem to have got good at not that. I wear braces, as I wear a size or so larger than I should need, but that's because of my urostomy bag, a belt does not work, I need to have the room there for the bag to fill properly so the braces do that for me but give me a loose waist band. I should imagine not many people need that.

So far i am happy with the jeans, very comfortable, only issue is with knee armour in it can create a bit of moisture around the old knees, but really not a big issue, off to Holland for a few days, see how i get on with them if it gets hot..
