First ride of the year
« on: May 12, 2016, 10:04:41 AM »
I took the XBR out for its first ride of the year, sadly still in its naturaly asperated form (ran out of time to do all the mods) I did however make 2 changes from last year as I was experiancing an unacceptably high tick over. I roughened up the inside of the intake spigot and modified the carb spray tube to the same pattern as a Norton by cutting back the rear of it. It now ticks over at 1500 rpm rather than 1800 rpm and seems to pull better up to 2500 rpm

It's a while since I had my Commando (and even longer since it was on Mk 1 Amals) but I understood the cutaway spray tube was intended for two-strokes.

Please forgive me if my memory is faulty.......

There are 3 spray tubes for the Amal carb, most come with a standard straight cut tip, there was also an angled tip for 2 strokes and finally a tube with the back half removed designed specificly for the 850 commando. I read on a Velocette and Vincent site that people had tried the cutback 850 tubes and it improved the idle and low speed range, so I thought I would give it a try.

The theory goes that on a big bore engine there is so much suction at low revs that a lot of the fuel goes straight up out of the jet and hits the underside of the slide causing the fuel to puddle and not break into fine droplets, by cutting the back away, the fuel has a better chance to hit the airstream and get drawn into the engine.

The spray tube is the little brass bit that is pressed into the throat of the carb not to be confused with the needle jet that sits in the main jet assembly which are available in either 2 and 4 stroke types

With carburettors one slight change can effect other things so I decided to rejet the carb and see if any further improvments could be made after altering the spray tube, good result, changed the throttle slide from a 3.5 to a 3 and changing the needle jet from a 107 to 108 the result 1100 rpm stable tickover or a slightly dodgy 1000 rpm tickover, and thats with a big cam, lightened internals and a lightweight flywheel
