Webbed feet
« on: January 02, 2016, 07:35:00 PM »
So I went out on a club run today, and not surprisingly, I was the only person to turn up, as the weather was pure p@@@! But I just NEEDED to get out for a spin.
So I took myself off to the RE dealer at Oxford Island for a visit, only to find it closed and under about a foot of water, as were the neighbouring businesses  :(
Normally when the weather is very wet, I stick my nylon over boots on over my combat boots, but today I didn't bother, so my feet were sodden within a few miles. Just wondered if any of you know of, or have used waterproof socks?
I'm afraid, unlike some other thumpeteers out there  ;) , I do not like spending money on the best of gear, but rely on good old army surplus off of fleabay, or from Johnsons of Leeds at the Farmyard  :)

I've got some Goretex liners. I've only used them once and while they work the feel of soggy leather remains. They have the same issue as over boots, you don't want them on all the time, so need to decide which days to wear basically a plastic sock.

I still just end up wearing wool socks and if you get wet you just change them.

Until I could finally afford some Altberg boots I wore Goretex or Sealskin socks and they worked a treat.  The ex army ones are cheap, work but are for left and right feet and size really matters.  Some people need boots a size larger but I guess it depends what socks you wear with them.

ive had goretex socks for a few years, theyre fantastic, make sure you get the longest ones you can find, go outdoors sells them almost knee length, the beauty of them , aside from keeping your feet dry, is that your boots tend to dry out faster because your feet arent soaked. ive always found that if wearing goretex socks, you dont want to wear waterproof boots. goretex works only when theres airflow over it to carry the moisture away, waterproof boots tend to keep the air out too so the vapour cant get away, hence your feet get sweaty and clammy.

I have a pair of Grafters gortex patrol boots, £20 version of the Magnum ones the Police use. They are lightweight, really comfy and so far I've never came home with wet feet, been using them for the past 5 years

i think a lot of problems with goretex clothing is down to people not really understanding how goretex works, if you wear goretex socks under wellys, then your feet will still get sweaty, same as goretex tops under non breathable waterproof jackets. goretex repels water but has holes in it small enough to let water vapour out, so if there is air movement round the outside of the item, then the vapour gets away and you dont feel sweaty, but put it in a place where the air cant ger tound it, and it feels clammy as hell.

So, I've ordered a pair of ex army goretex socks and a pair of ordinary goretex waterproof prayer socks, whatever they are. Each for £15 inc post. So I'll see how I get on  :)

I`m on a Guzzi forum as well and everyone is having the same problem at the moment. I remember the good old Derry Boots, not very stylish but I liked them and from memory did a great job of keeping the water out??

In the 70's on my work commute i used to wear wellies for waterproofness!I shudder to think of the (lack of)protection they offered  and they were of no use in the cold either.

I wore wellies for years for wet weather commuting. I had some 'builders' wellies with steel toecaps and ankle protection - not as good as a pair of boots but better than normal wellies.

These days I don't need to use the bike in bad weather so it tends to stay in the garage during the winter and in wet weather - a fair weather biker!... sad ain't it. ( mind you I have done my time getting soaked and freezing my nuts off!)

Yes -same here Steve C-if it's wet or threatening rain i'll take the car now.I'm lucky enough to own a convertible sports car which affords the best of both worlds.
