A grand day out!...
« on: September 23, 2015, 03:42:29 PM »
Day off, SWMBO has gone to London with her sister for a couple of days, No3 son gone to work......I'm free!!...so I went for a ride out....

To the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirky to visit their Lancaster 'Just Jane'.  Great day, lots to see, if you are remotely interested in engines, planes or WWII history it's a must go to if you are in the area. Only £7 to get in and you won't get away for at least 2 or 3 hours. Also home to the Lincolnshire Aircraft Recovery Group who find and recover crashed WWII planes which are displayed at the Heritage Centre.

Highly recommended. ( but not open on SUNDAYS)

Hi Steve, some crackin photo,s. Probably don,t really do the planes justice eh??  Bet ya felt pretty small stood at the side of them tho eh?? Great stuff kindda brings out that British stiff upper lip thing n certainly makes one feel pretty humbled that's for sure. Thanks for the post and again (bit like manxies guzzi photos) sometimes good just to see something a touch different.  Cheers Michael

It's a hell of a thing to stand underneath.  I was surprised just how big the Dekota is up close, not that much smaller than the Lanc! But the really poignant thing is looking at the remains of the crashed planes, British and German, that have been recovered...really makes you think as most of the aircrew were probably not much older than my youngest son.

Bomber Command Memorial centre opens at Lincoln next year, def going to have a run over there! Hopefully 'Thumper' the BBMF Lanc will be back in the air by then.

You need to go again on a day they do Taxi runs. When they taxy out the end of the wing passes over your head! you can be that close. All four merlins running. At the end of the run they run the engines right up on the brakes for a couple of minutes. I have been 3 times now. Wouldnt pay to go aboard personally but they are always booked in advance.
