Hi all, I'm new to the forum and I was told one Simon Morgan may be a member. He has or had a cb500s sidecar outfit and I am looking for details of the outfit as I want to build a similar one.

Simon used to be active on the forum, so somebody must have his details?

Hi cc1085,

I've been running a CB500S with a velorex chair for some 3 to 4 years now and I've been very pleased with it. It's my first combination, so I haven't any comparisions with other outfits, but to me i it performs well and has been great as a cheap winter rally hack.

Graham Carrick actually married the bike to the chair for me, so i won't be able to answer specifics on setting it up, I'm afraid (I'm happy to take measurements/photos, though), but I'll be able to answer any more general questions you might have. I've done a few changes to it to myself, mainly to "winterise" it (heated grips, snow tyres & chains, handlebar muffs, power socket) and I've altered the gearing on it (3 teeth up on the rear) to make it more manageable in the snow/mud. It pretty good on fuel economy (circa 50mpg, I think) and it'll hold 70 to 75mph on the motorways fully loaded with all my camping gear (large tipi or bell tent with all the "extras" needed for winter camping comfort!).

I've currently got the chair off the frame in the garage to make life easier in replacing the sidecar swingarm to one with a larger 20mm spindle (I bent the thinner one on a meet in Germany) and to treat the rust that has accumulated through the winter use. Ideally, I'd have had the chassis powder coated prior to when the outfit was first built, but at the time I wanted it all built to a budget as i wasn't sure if I'd be taken with riding an outfit.

Thanks for reply Simon. I briefly met Graham Carrick at a Dragon Rally so it really is a small World we travel in. I'm thinking of putting a chair on a well used CB that I have as I intend to travel to the Elephant and other winter rallies and CB5's outfits are rare. Great to to have your input as I wasn't sure whether to go ahead or not but now I think I will give it a go. Thanks again for info and maybe meet you in the snow and ice sometime.

Best of luck with your build Thom. I've certainly found it to be a great tool in the snow, I even took it to the bottom field (and more importantly back up from!) at the Eleffantentreffen the last time I was there, which is something I wouldn't have contemplated when I've been there on solo machines.

Feel free to get in touch. The outfit should be at The Dragon, if you're going, should you want to see it in the flesh.

I've still got a nicely powdercoated left hand frame rail for the unfaired CB500, with a sidecar lug welded on.

It's my old rail from my tatty CB500/box sidecar Tauerntreffen hack. I was going to fit it to Simon's bike, so I had it blasted and coated, but the faired model has a different engine mount on that rail (why oh why, Honda?)

It's up for grabs if anyone wants it. Say £10 and postage? The welding cost more than that.

The CB500 with a light chair is an excellent outfit, the fuel consumption is still good and the bike is tough.

However, I'm building a XBR500 outfit next with a big wheel chassis, lightweight Squire chair, leading link forks and a 15" rear wheel that takes car tyres
