Once you've pressed OK it disappears. Loads of sites have had this sort of thing. Just so they can't (in theory) track you without your knowledge.

Hurrah! The captcha has disappeared. Maybe I'm now persona grata.

Regards "cookies".... Not that I profess to be "tech-savvy"..... but an IT whizz of a friend made sure, when I got a computer, that it was "locked-down" fairly tight.... One of the things he installed at the outset was something called  "C-Cleaner".... At the end of each period of use on-line, I run this little programme religiously, ( as well as a security scan ). Apparently, as well as deleting your browsing history, it will get rid of the aforementioned critters..!!  Regards ... Tony

I've run C(rap) Cleaner for several years and it certainly seems to get rid of most of the nasties. Loads of sites put cookies on your computer.

Its an EU requirement, it came in a couple of years ago so the forum is a bit behind. The silly thing is that in order to prevent the banner from reappearing each time then you must use a cookie. On a forum like this cookies are used to 'remember' your last visit so new posts can be flagged and to keep you logged in if you have chosen that option as well as any customisation you may have applied to the formatting.

Thanks. I was just wary of anything which might be spurious. If it's kosher, and necessary then that's fine.

Cheers.

"C-Cleaner"...Like a lot of these computer cleaners you have to pay for them. They catch you out with the heading "Free Download" then it scans you PC then to clear everything it has found you then have to pay for the privilege. Basically it is a frightener and it is another way of wrenching the wands out of your pocket. There are plenty of completely free PC cleaners about but you probably have them installed with windows if you are on windows as well as antiviral stuff anyway. Best thing to do is to do a defrag if you are downloading and saving a lot of stuff once a month to help things along. One other thing keep swapping your passwords around the different sites you belong to that way if you have three or four different passwords you can remember them.

My total IT knowledge could be written on the back of a postage stamp. Not something to be proud of in these modern times, but that's the way it is  :-\
One piece of advice has always stuck with me since I heard Stephen Fry say it on QI, and that is to never have passwords that you can remember. You need so many these days, that the advice is to make them up out of spurious mixtures of letters and numbers, and write them down somewhere that only you know. One way is to pick any old novel/book, and write them all in there, then leave the book amongst all your other books. Easy peasy  :)
