No one ever said they wouldn't buy a bike because the parts were expensive. It's the same sale as Russian fish eggs, Italian Sunglasses and walls grafitied on in a certain style; fashion.
Landrovers used to be bought as working vehicles by people who might work out the whole vehicle cost of that and the competitor.
There is also the aftermarket pricing factor: you won't scrap the bike over seventy quid. I can point you in the direction of a certain Landrover part that they bought for a tenner, sold themselves for three hundred and Halfords sold for seven hundred. When your Discovery failed the MOT for bad brakes you'd buy one and because it was a safety item few people would buy the Turkish copy for a hundred.
Car volumes reduce costs but prices cease to be related once there is a margin. In thirteen years in the industry I never took much notice of costs. On the OE side you get the sale even at a loss so that the AM side can bring in the big money.
