I rather enjoyed reading about the Boiling petrol vapor engine, what a dangerous device, no wonder so many people were burned or killed, and enough said about the molten caustic soda engine !!!!

Do you think there is any merit in the variable stroke approach? Would be a good way to cut pumping losses. Although frictional losses would maybe go up?

The Japanese car industry are already experimenting with Atkinson engines, where the expansion stroke is longer than other strokes

Actually, what I meant was variable capacity. As achieved by variable stroke. Thinking (naively probably!) that using a wot and varying the engine cubic capacity to meet power demands would theoretically cut pumping losses.

And bring with it a host of other drawbacks. Nice thought though.

With modern materials a lot of these ideas become more practical. We are getting to the point that variable stroke could be achieved with a crank made of something that expands when an electrical signal is applied. It fixes the stuff the Victorians and Edwardians tried to do mechanically and had to make hugely complex. We will see things like sleeve valve engines with ceramic dry lube bits first though.

Knight Sleeve Valve with fluid fly wheel and pre-select gearbox......not forgetting trying a face cam again.    ;)
