EEEK!!! How Much!!
« on: October 03, 2013, 08:45:27 PM »
Picked up a copy of Classic Bike Guide the other day for the article on the new Enfield Continental and reading some of the other articles I found one on the upcoming Stafford Show. Part of the article is a bit on the highlights of the Bonhams Auction and one of the highlights is a GB500.....the estimate is £6000-£8000!!! :o

Are they really worth that now? I would have though maybe £4k for a really nice low mileage example but £8000!

The new GB TT zero miles sold for £9200 silly money IMHO. There is another zero miles one on ebay Germany for £6500 ish so someone has paid £3k too much.

In France, this bike is very very very rare, but it is €6000-€80000 wich are £5077-£6770.

So you save about £900.

But there are few ads.

GB500tt going for £9200 at Bonhams auction last Sunday..... I think the biggest winner there must be Bonhams themselves. The "hammer price" must have been about £8375. Bonhams usually charge £30 plus vat, to include a single picture in their glossy auction brochure, and they also get a 10% commission from the seller, AND, the buyer. This means they have made over £1700 on this lot, with the chancellor getting about £340 in vat. If the buyer wants to put the bike on the road, DVLA would want a chunk of vat, because I understand that with the bike being zero miles.... it is regarded as "brand new". So the seller has made a whisker short of £7500 on a £3000 bike over an investment period of 23 years..... What would all of you lot rather have done....?  Lock it away to apreciate in value, or do as nature intended....? and enjoy the ride.....

It hadn't turned a wheel in 25 years, probably in someones collection or an investment. If someone has just paid nearly £10k chances are it will end up in someone elses collection ( I may be wrong, but probably not). Bikes need to be ridden, if not they're just expensive decorations.

'New' or not, I still think it's silly money for what is basically an XBR500 in an Armani suit.

Very nice! and a good price too.

GB's are always going to be worth more than XBR's - I can see £3-3.5K for a GB, maybe £4k for a real mint one but I just think £10k is silly and will price GB's out of the pockets of folk like us who just want to ride and enjoy them and put them into private 'collections'.

Have you got the GB500 addendum to the XBR500 workshop manual?

Have a full factory Honda GB manual US I think , a few small issues with the bike the previous owner has messed with the gearing ,I think the standard gearing was fine and he had put 20/50 oil in it DOH...

A lot of GB owners seem to fit a different rear sprocket. There was an article in Classic Motorcycle Mechanics which spoke to 6 owners up in Yorkshire and they'd all changed the gearing.  Not really sure why, the standard gearing on the XBR seems pretty good and I think the GB's is the same.

( a nice little flyscreen would finish it off a treat! ;))

Nice but a 400 is only worth £800. ;D
