So I read, very sad and a lesson for us all.

I had wrongly assumed a heart attack when I first heard it, given the propensity of dragoneers to eat fatty food and inhale smoke etc.

Poor chap.
Note to Self: Shiney side goes UP.

So very true. I got into biking in the 70s because I thought it was cool. Walking around the Dragon Rally site tests this belief every time  ;)

Very, very sad and totally avoidable.

Having seen the loss of David Swallow, racing motorcyclist, to a barely lit disposable barbie in the back of a van "to get a bit of heat" afore retiring, every occurence of this clearly paints the images I have of the night of good craic and "Goodnights", followed by the ghastly realisation that all was far from well the next morning because he wasn't having a wee "bit of a lie in".

If you have a chance to do something about carbon monoxide poisoning, please do and remeber not to get caught yourselves, no matter how cold it may be.

Please tell others: CO-bealarmed

Thank you.

Bill.

Yes, young Swallow's death was very sad.

It's hard to think that people still haven't got the message about using heaters in tents after all the high profile cases, but you can see why people assume it will be fine in a tent. Unfortunately some of them never wake to find out their mistake.

And some are ignorant to the fact that it is related to certain fuels, ie. just gas.

I told a friend about this incident who was at the same rally, it transpires that he also had a heater on all night but said that he(and his two mates!!!) were ok because they used a paraffin heater and wouldn't dream of using a gas one. I think his saving grace was that he had a bigger tent with no fitted groundsheet.
