XBR running problems
« on: September 03, 2012, 03:07:01 PM »
I have a little problem
The old girl starts fine in the morning, does about two miles and then conks out, she will just about fire while I have my thumb on the starter.
Give it five mins and she'll fire up for another couple of miles.
So instantly I think to myself the coil is on its way out!!
All of the above happens at 15 degrees in the morning at home time from work 25 degrees she works fine!!  :-\

Do you still think it's the coil?

I have ordered a new one, but it comes without the spark plug cap, is this removable and if so how

Thank you anticipation

Hi

those symptoms sound like coil to me. OR it could be a blocked tank vent - i.e. when cold no built up pressure in tank - sits at work gets warm and pressurises enough to get you home...
Plausible? :-\

Two tests:
Does the coil get hot?
When it conks out if you gently open the tank do you hear any inrush of air (it will not be much...)? If you open the tank and close it does it then start up more or less straight away (once carb bowl refilled)?

new plug cap just screws on the new lead.

Cheers frog,
I've thought about the fuel cap and had a suck on it (got a lung full of petrol, nice) and it seemed to be clear

Just hoping, the new coil 'll sort it

I had a similar problem. Sometimes had a spark. Sometimes not. When it fails check for a spark with plug held against head (cylinder head that is!) If its not you now its not the fuel supply.  Mine was the exciter coil on the stator. Manual says to check for continuity to earth on that single wire (red & black i think) that goes to the alternator.

This bike is driving me mad......
Finally got round to fitting a new coil, took over a week after my missus lost the first one I ordered after picking it up from the post office.
Any way coil fitted, started first time, well pleased, then I started to rain, so I headed back in the house.
Hour or two later, went out, would it start, hell no!!
Bike will only fire while my thumb is on the starter and then it sounds as if the ignition is retarded??
Now at the end of my tether, I pushed the bike to a local mechanic, he's gone through the system and cant find a fault apart from the CDI unit, he found that if he tipped it on its side the bike would start??
He stated that its not the wiring as he held them in a way that it couldn't effect the tipping of the CDI.
How can a bunch of transistors set in silicon, be effected by the way its held
It's now running again, well for the moment!!
So now its possibly time for a CDI

Any ideas folks, the only ones I can find on line are on e-bay and quite pricey
also would it be worth/ok to fit xl600 or xr600 CDI if I can find one at the right price

No reason that i can think of and the CDI is completely potted so nothing is going to move in there.

Can't really think how tipping the CDI would effect it unless there is a bad wiring connection somewhere - CDI's generally work or stop altogether.  If you can hang on keep looking on Ebay - the XBR CDI on Ebay now is expensive they generally go for £25-35 ish. XL600R CDI is supposed to give a power boost- more advance - but I haven't tried it personally - they usually go for £65 upwards. I don't know if Simmo on this forum has one, he's been selling a lot of XBR bit's recently.

Have you checked the Pulse generator? It needs an air gap of 0.8mm and I have heard of running problems before on XBR's when this has moved.  If you haven't got a workshop manual I can email you the section on ignition with the tests for the CDi and exciter coil/pulse generator if you PM me your email address.

It does sound to me like an intermittent fault in the wiring going to the cdi. I can recommend swapping to an xl600r cdi box to liven the engine up a bit
