srx exhaust mounts problem
« on: August 01, 2012, 08:14:40 PM »
I have a 1986 kickstart SRX 600 which I bought with a custom fitted exhaust - I think its is a BSA Goldstar exhaust fitted as two silencers - but it is really really loud. I have just bought a second SRX in bits and it has an origanal silencer which I thought I'd fit to see how it rides and sounds. I have established that the left hand (as you are sat on the bike) bracket is missing from the frame so I will need to fabricate a new one, the right hand bracket fits fine, but where does the bolt at the rear fit to? I would love some photos or a good explanation as to where it goes - can anyone help?

I am in the process of re-building the beast - when its done I will post some photos.

Cheers

The SRX exhaust is vastly over engineered. There are more brackets than required on the silencer. I am using a monoshock silencer in a twin shock frame and am only using 2 exhaust mounts and it has just passed a very strict MOT today and the exhaust doesnt move at all, although I am using solid mounts rather than rubber mounted ones. I will take some photos  tomorrow. Im sure you can probably get away with one less mount. Can you be a bit more specific about which bolt you are asking about (.....but where does the bolt at the rear fit to?)

Hi, I have just fitted the exhaust to my spare frame using the front left and right removable rubber mountedd brackets and it does indeed move. I suspect that when the downpipes are connected it will be a lot more rigid.

The fixing hole I speak of is on the rear right  of the exhaust on the buldge. It is a single M8 bolt hole which is withing what I can only describe as a folded and welded metal bracket. It sits just above the silencer behind the chrome cover plate.

Thank you for taking the time to answer,

Cheers

I think you are speaking of the parts number 22 on this chart.

No, parts 22 and 23 are both presentand correct. There is another mounting point on the rear of the silencer. I will take photos and post.

I think you are talking about item 24 on the parts list? It is a bit of a bu99er to tighten up! (It is on the later monoshocks!)

That might explain why I'm strugglin! Mines an early twin shock!

Does this bracket definately not exist on the earlier models? If it doesn't then I won't waste any more time on it - if it does then I need to see if I have it in the masses of boxes of parts I've got, failing that do you know where i can get one?

Cheers for your help

The bracket is definitely fitted to early twinshocks, it helps if you remove the brake lever when doing the bolt up.

I will have a look to see if I have one surplus to requirements in my boxes of bits. Will let you know if I have. The only problem is that the rubber mounting usually deteriorates. I have got round this by removing the rubber bush and fitted an Aluminium one to same dimensions.

Awesome, thanks for your help. Let me know if you need any bits, maybe we could trade?

I have access to a laser cutter which I can cut rubber with so I should be able to make something up failing that the aluminium iea sounds good.

Hi and thanks to all that have helped. I can report that I have found the bracket in question in amongst my collection of parts. All I need to do now is make up a new mount and weld it to the frame, give the exhaust a quick spruce up and I'm back in business.

Its definately easier when you know what you are looking for!
