SR500
« on: July 25, 2012, 11:36:41 AM »
Hi Could someone help me with this please.
I have a sr500 which came with another as a spares bike. The engine had dropped the exhaust valve. I have been striping the engine down and apart from that all seam's good. But i have taken the flywheel off OK and wanted to remove the Stator, Its screwed to a backplate which is riveted ? to the crankcase. How do i get these off so that i can remove the stator and wirering so that i can then have the cases blasted. Also will i encounter any other problems with this engine due to the valve problem. I would really like to rebuild this bike,Won't be original but hopefully still nice.
many thanks in advance

I will dig my parts list out and have a look how it is assembled. Will get back to you as soon as I can.

PS Is it a 2J4 model ?

Hi
I've put a link below to a picture of the caps, Thinking about it, the bike may be an American import. have owned the bike for about 6 years now.

im wondering if thats an anti tampering shear bolt, designed so that the head snaps off at a given torque setting to discourage anyone from altering the timing and thus doing any tuning. the pic does look like a shear bolt. this does make sense if it was an american market model, does it have the daft emissions controls on the air inlet side too? to get them off, you need to put an m6 or m8 nut on top of the bit shown in the pic, and then with a mig welder, weld the nut onto the head of the bolt, and remove it with an ordinary socket set. dont do it whilst its red hot, but do it before it cools completely. the thermal shock of the welding often assists in removing these. many jap bikes used similar bolts to secure their ignition locks to discourage hotwiring!

I agree totally with johnr. Having looked at both the European and Japanese parts lists for the 2J4(European with spoked wheels and disc brakes) and 3G1-7(Japanese spoked wheels with drum brakes) the parts lists for these models show an M6 x 16 or 15 long setscrew holding the stator in place. Im enclosing a copy of both these parts lists to show you. I think you will have to follow johns advice on how to remove them.

PS I have used a centre punch and small hammer to remove ignition switch/lock shear head bolts before now!! (With great care)

Many thanks for the info both of you . I managed to drill two small holes down each side and then ues a punch to get them started, this done the trick.
Cheers
