Sidecar buff required to answer query
« on: June 28, 2012, 11:44:52 AM »
I dont know anything about beezas, but I have a chance of getting a hold of a '54 single 500 with a rather cool sidecar, or a Beeza '55 A10 600 bothin reasonable condition and similar price. I would go for the A10 but ?? any ideas on which is the better bike (not withstanding number of Cyls)

If the single is a B31 and unmodified it will be a 350, although it is possible that it has been altered to a 500 as the conversion is readily possible. B31's are real nice old plodders, the B33 500 has more performance and should manage a chair OK, but the one to go for, if you want to keep the chair and everything else being equal, is the A10.

Hi Kurt,

If the A10 has had work done on the main bearings and other bottom end rectification then your choice would be correct, however I much prefer the sidecar on the single and you would not have so many bits to turn into cr*p the way old bikes seem to, ie repair is easier and less costly on the single, it might be better to go the single route and later if you find there is not enough ooomph then look for a sorted A10. I am at the "paying for it" end of falling in love with a 1955 Triumph Tiger 110 and even calling in favours and paying cash it is very expensive. There are many thing you can do yourself but line-boring after welding, replacing and re-cutting valve seats etc. costs money.

There is a firm near here, in Aberystwyth, that can certainly do pretty  much anything you want to an A10.  I've seen them build sidecar racers up to about 1000cc.  A10 is a great machine, though tbh I don't know much about the 350/500 singles.

SRM - worth checking out there website.
Note to Self: Shiney side goes UP.

Hi Kurt,

Choice is yours !  Both look to be pretty nice.
What you going to be using it for ?
500 nice plodder.Pull a chair nicely but relatively slowly.
650 twin pull it even better and hold a reasonable speed.

Both might be a little interesting stopping in modern traffic  ;)

As John said Expect to spend some money. On Both !
You will modify and set up to suit yourself.
I know I always do.

I'd be using it for club runs on Sundays and the odd showing off. thre are very few outfits in OZ at the best of times, but the alternatives are Urals, and converted Japanese bikes. These are not too bad if they have the Earls forks installed.

The Beezas are an oddity being 2 for sale 1 in Adelaide and 1 in country Victoria. so transport also needs to be factored into the overal costs . They are in the "average price range of $A10,000 while the Yammies run down as low for a 1000/4 at $4000. The most common are HD's they are in the $20,000 plus range All in all theres only about 21 second hand outfits advertised in Bikesales

Can't really help on the brit bikes, both look nice so depends which you fancy I suppose. As a slight aside on the Urals ( i use to run a Ural) The standard Ural outfit handles pretty well even with standard forks- certainly a lot better than many of the other bikes which have had sidecars bolted to them - The frames are really solid with tube walls about 6mm thick so they don't flex. You can also get the Russian equivelent of Earles forks for not too much money - a hell of a lot less than other aftermarket setups - which make them handle even better.

The A10 looks nice! ;)

I like the A10 too, It would be nice to meander through the hills and with all the long straight roads here it would not be too big a handful to drive. I am also looking for something that will appreciate with age. Actually buying it would be a course in logistics.
1 good: not registered in Victoria.
2 bad: needs rego in WA, but can probably get " club "rego
3 bad: transport
4: good : have friends in Melbourne who I can recall favours from.
5 bad: freinds in Melb would have to travel 140kays each way to buy and pick it up with trailer... streeeeeeeeeetching the freindship a bit. freinds need to mind it for a couple of months till I sort out transport. I prefer driving over to pick it up with a trailer.
6 bad: organising transport to Perth from Melbourne.

In any case I would need to get it mechanically checked before I part with the H.E. readies.

7Good.. I can procrastinate... not much market for outfits, it could be there for months, and the price could drop if the seller needs cash.

It would look so nice parked up next to the MuZ.

Crikey... all that makes Gareth's recent trip to Scotland to pick up an outfit seem like a picnic. And as for altering the bike's registration status, all we did was take off the 'Ecosse' sticker and replace it with a 'Cymru' dragon  ;)

I'd still rather go to Melbourne to pick up a bike.

It's easy, fly out and ride it back - you'll have it sussed by the time you get back - if you live.
