XBR Sparkplug
« on: December 02, 2011, 03:16:40 PM »
Hi, just wondered if anyone else had experienced any difficulties removing the sparkplug from an XBR500....I bought a sparkplug socket, but it goes nowhere near the plug. There's just not enough room to get in there.....wondering whether to just have the socket turned down.......cheers.

You need a long reach 12mm plug spanner.  You can buy a CX500 box spanner for about £5 on Ebay, I use a draper 12mm deep socket spanner which has a Hex head on the top for an extension.  Be careful when you remove the plug, they can get very tight and accumulate a lot of road crap around the plug. Best thing is to give the plug a long blast of WD40 using the little extension pipe to try and blast most of the crap out of the way. Let it soak overnight then ease it out backwards and forwards until you've got it most of the way out then give it another blast of WD40 to blow away any remaining crud. Don't be tempted to use extension bars for more leverage as it's not that hard to bu99er up the thread or shear the top off the plug.
There is a basic spanner in the tool kit but it isn't up to much.

Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional!

I've always found the original toolkit box spanner to be the best tool for the job, especially when combined with the 12mm cranked spanner.
