Yes chaps, a job well done. Which rather set it apart as on the whole I found the show a bit of a disappointment,

Hi all,
First of all I hope everyone got home safe and sound. I also wanted to say, I had another great weekend in the company of some very good Thumperclub friends. I thoroughly enjoyed being on the stand and chatting to one and all, those who passed by, or those who wanted to know, or those who just wanted a coffee or sweet. The judging as usual was the normal "Morton Farce", which flew in the face of the Grandiose effort put in to make it something different. General feedback was that our stand was a bit of a breath of fresh air. My sincere thanks to Gareth and Graham especially and Leah, Penny and Mark (and Evil Knievel for sitting still all through the weekend!)
See you all again soon at the next event.
Im including a few photos for those unable to make it.

Ian :)

Thank you to all who turned up and helped out, it would have been impossible without your efforts. Further to that it would have been a lot less fun without you guys. Great company.

Thanks also to all who visited the stand.

Biggest thanks of all to Gareth for putting so much time and money into the stand. It was decided that no club funds would be diverted for the show and so we bore the cost ourselves, with Gareth providing the majority of the wonga. It's not all wasted though, the Sideburn magazine crowd have asked us (the only club they asked) to attend their Rollerburn event in November, as long as we bring Evel Knievel  ;) So, at least some of the stand will go on to have another life.

We also displayed a large poster saying how much we are all going to miss Bruce and the club hand-out cards had Bruce's picture and name on them too so each time we handed one out we told the recipient all about our much-missed fellow member. I also bumped into the chap who had transported Bruce on his final ride on the sidecar of another Big4. That outfit was at the show too.

Looking at these photos it is still hard to see how we didn't receive a club stand award when the second-placed club merely put down carpet, parked some bikes in a line
 and unfurled pop-up banners  >:(

I thought the quality of the bikes at the show had improved and each year it seems like the standards (especially for specials) are higher. How a very ordinary Kawasaki triple stood out enough to be judged 'Best in Show' is a bit of a mystery to me and an awful lot of fellow show attendees, but its location on the VJMC stand was hinted at as being a factor. This year it seemed that the high quality of very many as-original restorations would make it hard to pick one as being 'better' than another... but what do I know?

Anyway, back to real life now and off to work

p.s. Yes, that is RobG's old CB250RS in the photos, good enough to be a winner in its own right I'd say.

Hi all

Penn, I and Rex the SRX got back safe & sound last night and Rex bore me to work this morning with minimum kickstart fuss ;D. I echo everyone's sentiments re the excellent effort put in by Gareth and Graham to produce such a colourful, imaginative and amusing themed stand for the benefit of the Stafford show and it's punters, only to receive zero recognition. It beggars belief and I am disgusted by Mortons but not entirely surprised...

We had good laughs all weekend though with a lovely group of people. Onwards and upwards and don't let the bastards grind you down  ;)

Hi all,

As said previously by everyone it was a great weekend, thanks to everyone who atteneded and helped out on the stand. Thanks Mark for the grpphics on your bike it made all the difference. Ian, what can i say you are the walking SRX knowledge base and happy to share it with all who will listen. Leah your bike looked fantastic in the model box as we knew it would. Still think it was Penny's fault grrrrrrrrrrrrrr, only joking.
Thanks Graham for the time and money you put in, i know you dont have much spare time at the moment so i really do appreciate it. Absolutely gutted that we didnt get any award, the whole idea was to try and generate funds for the club as the pot is a nearly empty at the moment.

So sorry Tim that you couldn't make it hope you get the bike sorted soon and i'm sure we will see you at some events in the future.

Anyway off to put my feet up for the day.

Cherrs
Gareth

P.S Leah i hope you weren't to distressed at finding Evel the way you did, Graham did look for signs of life but with no joy, what a way to go!!!
Will post the pictures later.

Wish I could have been able to go!  :'(

The stand looked really good! How did it not win!! It's a fix I tells ya!

Hey Leah, surely you bike is worth much more than £7.95, but if that's all you want for it when can I come round? I'll even let you keep the change from a tenner!  :D

I'll be there next year chaps and with luck being able to lend me wee beastie too if she's wanted..

Finally many congrats to all who put the work into such a good stand! You done yourselves proud!!

You'd change your mind if you saw it in the flesh, it's terrible, small chip on the frame and a little bit missing off the exhaust shield, she's a crook, £7.95 indeed.

And as for the RS250 having one of the handlebar clamps the wrong way around, well there was uproar there amongst some of the community.

Surely it must be worth £7.95 scrap weight if nothing else!!  :D  Besides if the engine runs in any way at all i'd be interested..  ;)

RS250 with a backwards handlebar clamp!!!!!!  :o  What would the elders say!!   ;D

i do have to say that im amazed that the thumper club stand didnt warrant an award of any kind. the effort that went into it must have been as apparent to the judges as it was to me and many others who saw it. i cant think of another club stand that had as much effort go into its construction as that one.

...I am disgusted by Mortons but not entirely surprised...

To be fair the judging has nothing to do with Mortons, but I have to say that they need to address the issue. The votes are cast by the clubs that attend the show. This is obviously open to abuse. If the 'Big Nine' bike clubs decide to all vote for one of their number in a category then it would give that club a massive advantage. I'm not saying this has happened, but there's no check on that sort of behaviour.

Another thing that Mortons may care to address is setting the criteria for the voting. Glynnis (from Mortons) said to me that some clubs prefer stands that display bikes without a theme, whereas others appreciate the humour of the themed stands. Perhaps Mortons need to clarify that the award is for the best stand, not the best collection of bikes.

As it happens we had (I think) the only CB250RS on show and two spectacular SRX specials (and a nice Armstrong) so the stand didn't suffer from a lack of metal. The CB alone attracted lots of attention.

I wish we had a picture of the Kettle Club stand so that I could illustrate the huge disparity between our stand and theirs in terms of thought and effort. However, they are £500 better off and we got zero.

Perhaps Mortons could be directed to this forum and this topic in particular, just to see how high feelings are running....maybe they dont have anything to do with the voting ON THE DAY, but they certainly could clarify criteria and certainly get the public involved, after all its the public who decide (by attending, or not!) whether the show is a success or not. Mortons have decided the by inviting all and sundry to the CLASSIC MECHANICS SHOW, that they are only interested in making the odd buck or two (Ref all the modern bike stands outside who were allowed to show their wares).
I really think they need to be awakened from their comotosed state of mind and realise that this show wouldnt be in existence but for the likes of the Thumperclub over the years.
I hope the kettles run dry.
