New Thumper Owner (SR250)

hi all been lurking around here for a while, well i have actually got myself an N reg Yamaha SR250.
been having a scratch around but info is fairly limited. Anyone have experience of these?

mostly going to be used a commuter tool but are there any parts available to make a bit louder and such like .
also going to be changing the bars for something flatter but then possibly going to need to source alternative cables etc

SR250 should make a good commuting tool and I do recall seeing a cafe-raced one once! I think only the frame forks and engine were original...

Afraid I have no first hand experience but Fleabay should throw up any spares you need.

I had a cafe racer SR250 once but I had Ceriani forks on it. I ran an AngloBikes Mega on a different downpipe although I forget what that was off. I also has a 34mm Amaml carb on it. The pipe and carb added a lot of performance to it. With the forks front dropped and shorter shocks it handled pretty well too. Stock front brake belongs in the bin though. On the pic below it had some fairly long shocks on it and does look tall.

The brakes aren't that bad; but people are not used to lubricating and freeing their cables these days. They need more attention than disc brakes. The engine is remarkably strong.

that SR Cafe looks decent,
the exhaust on mine has a funny "box" on the exhaust which i think provides some extra sound deadening i guess.
need to find a replacement filler cap for the fuel tank, anyone got any suggestions?

SR250's are great bikes, a mate had one a few years back I borrowed it a couple of times and enjoyed riding it, The engines are pretty tough as well

I dont think you will have much trouble finding a fuel cap as Yamaha used the "parts bin" regularly

The funny box is for exhaust tuning ie engine pulses. I'd leave it in place as a friend had one of these bikes and chopped that bit off and created a bit of  flat spot in the mid-range.

1st order of business is to ring around tomorrow for a fuel cap and go from there

hi i ran a SR 250 for a winter bike for a couple of years and found it very reliable and had no problems at all.I have to agree with rhinoman the front brake is rubbish  that is the only thing i would work on if i ever had another one tommy

new ignition fitted and cap modded till new one arrives

after washing it will be posting some pictures.

think the speedo drive is knackered in the front wheel and bulb blown in the speedo

You want to check the tabs in the speedo drive, I've had several bikes where a broken speedo drive turned out to be the tabs bent back.

Sigma digital speedometers [now wireless] have worked well on the Duke. After one unit failed from 10K of vibromassage, it was returned to Sigma in Germany, within the warranty period, with a polite explanatory letter. Complete new kit supplied by return of post and this proved very reliable.    A lot easier and cheaper than paying extortionate sums of money for 'original' power sapping mechanical wotsits!

thanks for the tip on the sigma,
hopefully just be a case of the drive in the front wheel is iffy, after a quick look it appears to spin correctly and doesnt look damaged, have a feeling the cable isnt correct or the pickup has been mullered as the previous owner said it did flick around on the dial.

I had one for many years.. bullet proof and reliable. I replaced the unobtainium muffler assy with a cheapie dunstall copy and when that disintegrated, I replaced it with another cheapie. See pic on projects if its still there.
