Weekend debrief - 27/02/11

No photos I'm sorry, my camera died  :(

I was speaking to a friend of our esteemed club member Bruce last week. Bruce hasn't been well and is, at present, relying on help from friends and family to get to bike events. His friend (Ian) mentioned that the next event he would be going to would be this weekend's Panther Owners Club Winter Rally at Clee Hill near Bruce's Ludlow home.

Having missed Bruce at the Dragon rally I thought it would be a good idea to ride the 80 miles or so to the event. I decided not to publicise this on the forum because Bruce is a lurker and would have seen it. I thought it better to PM some of his fellow TC Dragon Rally chums. In the end Mark and Ifor also made the trip in Mark's van.

I set off late on Saturday morning and headed up the M4 and A449, which was boring but fast. I had chosen to head north at Monmouth on a nadgy A road and this was a good decision. The riding was enjoyable and I made good time with hardly any other traffic in evidence. On through Hereford and on to Ludlow and then off on another minor road to Clee Hill.

Ian had told me that the first pub I got to would be the venue, but the road I took brought me into the heart of the village. There was a pub nearby and as I pulled in I saw Mark and Ifor walking in. It turned out that I was in the wrong pub, but we were early and the lads needed to find a pub with a telly showing the Welsh game (which the venue pub wasn't).

I had a pint in this pub and was perplexed to see that the bar staff were taking bets on horse races from the punters and ringing them through to a bookie. Even stranger was a wall devoted to selling brand new electrical items. I asked about these things and the barmaid said "we do a bit of everything". I said "well give us a haircut then, my barnet is shocking". She didn't.

I left the lads watching the game and went down to the other pub. I had a very enjoyable time nattering to Panther owners and then Ian and (I think) his brother turned up. One bloke had a fantastic 650 Panther and single seat Canterbury sidecar, but unfortunately, as mentioned, my camera packed up.

Bruce arrived with his current/ex wife Mandy (it's a long story) and we had an enjoyable time talking bollocks about bikes and rallies. It was nice to meet up again and I was glad I'd come. However, unlike Mark and Ifor, who were staying over, I had to get back home. I left in the dark and had a fairly stressful time on unlit A-roads, but made good time. I got back at 9.00 and when my wife saw me she said "you look terrible". 80 miles with the visor up had made my eyes solid red.

My ER5 didn't display its bizarre starting problem and, even better, did the whole trip between 55 and 70mph and averaged over 60mpg.

I paid the price today though, I am absolutely knackered.

Working all weekend as I'm trying to get a job finished and then start another immediately.

Down to the Barrel Bikers at Beachampton next weekend with a bit of luck. ;D
If I'm not working I'll be away on my bike camping!

Up to visit some mates in brum with a very quiet new baby.

Tamworths plastic supercar was the chosen transport.  It was a very pleasant trip, and while there we drank beer, ate curry and put the world to rights.

Mum did almost all the work, baby is 8 weeks.  Dad poured beer.  Me and my mrs drank it.

Not very "rock and roll" your 30s, is it?!

Then this morning had to free off the in-the-process-of-seizing back brake- 4 days non use.

That will need a rebuild when I do the back tyre.

Saturday saw AM panic for PM lunch with colleague and family and colleague and family and dropper in. Result roast pork dinner flavoured salad - see roast pork cold.
followed by pleasant circular walk.
Managed 2 or 3 bottled of plonk - that was my quota before bed.

Sunday was usual drill (with hangover) no preaching so light duties really

Took Skorpion to seaside today for coffee and cake with new boss. I had forgotten what  a delight to ride the  Skorpion is...would have another one if I could see a point and had the space

Hi #1, Pat & I went down to Staffs at on Saturday to the annual Round Britain Rally awards and evening meal at Conkers. Although we have participated the last three years I have chosen to have the award by post, so this year we went to meet other members and what a mixed bag they are......
Leaving the Hotel on Sunday morning I met Scott, who had received a 100% award the previous evening. He was starting his '07 350 Enfield, but it looked 30yrs old. I asked him what mileage he had covered to reach every part of the UK to get 100% and he answered........9,500miles.......From April to November.....I was stunned. He also had some Dragon Rally regalia, so maybe some of you know him.
   Dave....still stunned.
ps. we got a Gold.

As GC hilighted previously myself and Ifor popped up to see Bruce at the Panther Owners Rally, a small number there but a good atmosphere so decided to stop the night.

Ian and his brother also turned up but had had a bit of trouble with one of the bikes and had to bring the car last minute, they we still dressed in all their biker gear as they were running late.

Considerately Bruce turned up after the Welsh game finished which we were watching a mile down the road so managed to get to the rally pub before he turned up. ;) (was on standby awaiting a text from GC)

His face was a picture when he saw us there as he walked in.

Bruce it was great to see you and I hope it won't be too long before the next time.

Worked  :-\ ran/taught a course Saturday and Sunday. Got the new touring bicycle frame 3/4 built up on Sat night but haven't had time to touch it since  >:(
I've been given more responsibility in the part time job so it's getting frustatingly time consuming, also a new boss at the full time job has meant more work there as well! On the plus side I have work, on the minus side it's hard to maintain a life outside work. Ho hum.

Hmmm, the only cycling I'm getting is the hack back and forth to work just now, that bike build was done on my only free evening and is *still* sitting untouched since then  :( hoping I can finish it off maybe tonight and then stop using the roadbike as a hack.
Not a great cycling day today, a friend visited work (on his shiny roadbike) then 5 minutes after heading off he was brough back by a bloke in a van, dazed, bloodied and with a broken steerer tube  :o

Apparently he'd got a mile or so up the road and just as he turned at a junction the steerer snapped causing him to faceplant in front of the van. His helmet seems to have taken the brunt of the impact, and he passed the "what day is it?" pupil reaction etc tests but was extremely shaken and I had to pack him off to hospital to get a wrist x-ray, time will tell but my suspicion is it's broken. Then to further improve my day I got a flat on the way to the station  ::) ho-hum, now staying away from sharp things in case of the third bit of luck!
