Thoughts please!
« on: November 02, 2010, 04:51:28 PM »
I am in the middle of selling my Little "Minkey Bike" Lifan on Ebay. I already sold a recumbent bike so I am hoping to have some wonga to play with in a few days, assuming the Lifan actually sells.
Talking with one of the good people on this forum about possibly taking his, nicely modified, SRX 600. It is a lovely bike and I've always like the Yam singles so it is an almost certain if the Lifan sells.
If, on the other hand, nobody buys it ???
I just had a chat with a local dealer that I have had much business with over the years and he is a good bloke. He's made me an offer that sounds like a good one in words but not sure of the bike involved.
He'll take the Lifan and an old MZ 250 combo' that I have as part exchange and let me pay him the balance above what I give him over a period of time, looking at £15-00 a week for 40 weeks.
The bike is a "P" reg' Kawasaki KLR 650 C. It's had exhaust changed to a nice one and the past owner did the Supermoto thingy with the wheels. It's done 20K and sounds good.  The suspension is low enough for me, the Dwarf, to touch the ground with feet flat so it's okay physically. 650 water cooled single.
Any thoughts on it all?

p.s. If the Lifan does sell okay I will be looking at the SRX as a first choice deal.  ;)

Hard to advise as haven't seen any of the bikes involved, but would say this. Do you want the kwak or is this the first deal offered? Hate to tell anyone what to do, but never buy anything thinking you could live with it, cos all the little faults will grow and grow till you hate the thing.

Good points Squirrel.  I do want the SRX 600 but it involves cash up front and I am selling tents, bicycles and all sorts of stuff to try and raise the money.  The Kawasaki would be "Second Best" to the SRX6 but I saw it a few weeks ago and have had it in my mind ever since. I did have a try out ride today, only a few miles in local areas, and it was good to ride. LOUD is the only thing that I would like to change as it sounded like a straight through pipe!  I'm okay with volume but the raw Gunshot thing turns me off!
I'll see how things go inthe next few days. It could all fall to pieces if the Recumbent deal goes wrong.

I liked my KLR but you do need to watch out for balancer shaft problems and also cracked crankcases. They are a tall bike so you're quite high up and exposed.

I did a "Sit on it" test the other day and, even though I am a shortarse, the rear suspension went low enough for both feet flat to the ground.  Should it be as soft as that, I weigh in just over 20 stones :o?

Have you considered holding onto your money/waiting until you have sold everything and getting a monoshock SRX ?.

I have a pdf of the KLR650 workshop manual should you need it. It's quite hard to get hold of.

Thanks Dave B. I am still hoping all works out with the selling of stuff and I'll be onto SRX6+2X4's, advert pretty damn quick :o as I really like the 'C' reg' one he's got in the ad's at the moment!
All down to not getting any problems from the buyers on stuff.  I've got verbals on both at the moment but nothing concrete yet!

UPDATE!

Sorry to SRX6+2X4's but things didn't go as I was hoping and I am taking the KLR 650 simply as it worked out as a decent deal for me with P/X of stuff.  Don't have the cash and not likely to for some time now!!!

Dave B I would appreciate the PDF of the KLR Workshop manual. I'll pm you with an Email address, will that work as I am a Computer Klutz!!

Hi Steve

It's a bloody big file so I doubt it'll work as an email attachment. I'll try and upload it to one of those online file-share wotsits then send you a link to download it. If I make a bollocks of it (not unlikely) I'l stick it on a CD and post it to you.

I'm still looking for it at the moment, it's on a back-up disk here somewhere...

Picked the KLR up today. Brand new MOT and the only advisory was that the front brake lever was "A little short but still okay to operate" and that gives me no problems.  Risked riding it home, no Tax for a few weeks yet!  The engine braking is incredible!  Shut off in 3rd and near went over the bars!  I do like it though so I think I'll be okay with it.
