what polish?
« on: February 01, 2010, 09:28:29 PM »
Following on from Richards boot thread...

...Anyone got any recommendations for boot polish/dubbing?? I've always used Black Cherry polish with a light rub-over with Renapur leather balsam.

If you want shine, use Kiwi (cherry is rubbish, not enough wax in it!)
For waterproofing, Nikwax is excellent, though I've also had good results with Altberg's Leder Gris.

Avoid Dubbin

Nikwax is good - especially if you put it on with your fingers rather than a rag as it warms it up and it soaks in.  Have drenched boots in the past with warmed liquid Nikwax to get it deep into the leather - stand them in a warm place too, do the seams and welts with a good application of solid Nikwax and then buff.  Top up with eithe the liquid or the solid.  For extra waterproofness use the solid on the top and do not buff back.  Used to recon that a first application to a pair of waling boots would use up a tin or two of liquid and a tin of solid to get a good job done.  Mind, that much solid Nikwax applied over the course of a weekend, warming the tin, using fingers, keeping the boots in a warm place produced well proofed boots but they look shit...

Depends what you want them for - bulling or waterproofness ?

I have always used Nikwax in the past but due to my step up in the boot world just bought two tins of Leder Gris from these people..........

I used the Danner Boot dressing on my black boots and with good results. I also have the nikwax was as mentioned, and yes it's definitely better applied by fingers. Also, am I the only one who takes a real joy in looking after leathers/boots? Just the whole greasing of them, and then the smell afterwards. Wonderful.

Most of the time I use Renapur,it's dead easy to apply, just wipe it on with a sponge. For winter use it's Nikwax.Warm the boots and the Nikwax near the central heating boiler then apply loads.I have just done the Altbergs ready for the Dragon.

Cheers guys, I'll pick up some nikwax.

New boots [size 9] arrived and need some serious breaking in. Be using the size 10's with extra socks for the Dragon ;)
