Just how much is a petrol tank worth?

Been needing a decent (read no rust) tank for my SRX as part of its rebuild. One comes up on eBay 220539978739 and I think eek, £80 starting price. Confirmed with the help of Steve H that is a mono-shock version as the seller doesn't respond to questions. So I decide to bid on it, even though it has some nasty dings in it and its the wrong colour. Up, up away the price goes, I gave up at £100. For that money I have bought a whole working car before...

So are these tanks really as rare as rocking horse dung? At this rate, I will be buying a complete SRX as spares instead as it will be cheaper in the long run.

How many good tanks are left?

Even my hoard of XBR spares is suffering from shortages of some items. An XBR front wheel can be bought for next to nothing, but a rear wheel with a good drum is very expensive now.

Just to let you know I bought a tank from D & K before Christmas and I paid £75 + vat (15% at the time) It too had dings in it and it was for a twinshock. It was probably one of the best tanks I have seen on sale tho so it was worth it for me...I tried to buy on fleabay and always got beat so I decided to bite the bullet. If you need to contact D & K for second hand spares call 01782 862200 and ask for Pete.....I have always found him helpful but some people dont take to him. You take as you find.

Interestingly, D&K have just emailed me back and tell me that the tank for sale is from a twin-shock bike, when in fact it is for a mono-shock model!

I must admit, the one for sale does look to be in good nick. Now, do I prise open my creaking wallet further, and bid again? Oh, the ignominy of it all as inflation has hit a giddy 2.9% today with RPI at +2.4%. Urrghh. The impending rise in mortgage rate is waiting to greet us all next month as well...

I have sold 3 SRX tanks all with a number of pinholes in them and got around £30 for each them. which is shocking really.

I so badly want another  SRX400 but the 1st thing I would do is get a tank knocked up making sure that the tap feeds from the bottom. obviously filtering out the nasty bits later down the line.

I have 2 monshock tanks available.....both in need of tlc (no taps or caps) and will need treating for internal light rust....no dings, and are in a sort of standard yamaha black, a sort of base coat....believe it or not these are new old stock.....picked them up with a trailer load of srx stuff 6 years ago
