I happen to have a week off work - which has meant lots of sledging and mucking about in the snow - and explains a black eye as a result of failing to stop in time for the fence at the base of a local hill. Ouch.
Steve (Steffan) and I decided to celebrate by going camping last night in the Cambrian Mountains near Sarn Helen. We cheated a bit by taking my Fourtrak which coped fine in the snow, not much other than tractors and quad bikes are moving up there right now.
Camped on a friends land, not much wind but cold anyway, even the fire wood was frozen as it would sometimes just shatter when cut. We were able to experiment with the tripod and cooking grill - spatchcocked a chicken on it - and drank mulled wine with added Rum. Funny enough it was so cold I could barely taste the chili vodka in hot chocolate.
My new Uco candle lantern was a success after some experimentation and kept the tent snug through the night - the jury is still out on the optional beeswax candle in cold weather - but the paraffin wax seems to burn hotter. The gear worked fine but I do need to look out for some new winter boots, rather fancy an oversize pair of the new Army Cold Weather boot, successor to the Pro Boot.
Enjoyed it, certainly easier/more enjoyable than camping in the p*****g rain a la Llanthony.
