End of an era...
« on: December 07, 2009, 11:02:17 PM »
The old Squire is up for sale  :(

This sidecar has been with me for over ten years and I have to say that saying goodbye to it will be hard, but it's taking up space that's needed and I want to go another route with my sidecarring. It's been the most shameful machine at many a club event and even caused minor misery when the bike tyre punctured on the club trip to Normandy:

If anyone is interested the Ebay page can be seen HERE. If a club member is interested in it then PM me and we can talk about it.

A sad day, it's done a few good miles.

So what's the replacement?

No it's not an LCR (but now you mention it...  ;))

I have a Velorex chassis and body that I want to fit to the XBR. The bike will also be back on 650 power as the 500 lump is sounding very old now (160,000 miles old). It will also have leading link forks, a 16" front wheel and a 15" rear wheel. The aim is to make it better handling, faster and lighter.

It might also be red  ;)

As opposed to yellow which, as we all know, makes your bike slower (unless you're Rossi on a Honda).

As for teh Ebay auction, 200 hits, 27 watchers and NO bids!  :(

40 watchers and no bids  >:(

Compared to some of the tatty, incomplete Squires that get offered on Ebay this is a bloody steal. If I had the time to clean it up, paint the chassis, buy a screen and fit the seats this would be listed for £250.

Now GC!

Don't get bitter and twisted. You know we live in a free market economy and being one of Mrs T's incomprehensives you should be aware every thing has its price!  ;)

You don't imagine Darling and Brown would want it to carry 'wonga' between the treasury and BoE?

It has that certain rugged G4S look about it!  ;)

Alternatively, I can see a similarity between the hood and these hooded mouse traps. Selling point 'Mouse trap' sidecar, no vermin! ;)

Toodle pip. Bill.

"Wonga" don't you mean IOUs?  ;)

Blimey Bill, that's a hell of a list.

It's funny what you learn, we can all appreciate why loose change is called Shrapnel, but I had no idea of the etymology of the word itself:

"shrapnel - loose change, especially a heavy and inconvenient pocketful, as when someone repays a small loan in lots of coins. The expression came into use with this meaning when wartime sensitivities subsided around 1960-70s. Shrapnel conventionally means artillery shell fragments, so called from the 2nd World War, after the inventor of the original shrapnel shell, Henry Shrapnel, who devised a shell filled with pellets and explosive powder c.1806."

Aye Gc,

Steady! Its that word 'etymology'! ::)

This may cause inversion of the leather club chair, spilling the incumbent and his tipple onto the floor. ;) That was not my intention.

My regards, Bill.

Well, a few hours to go on the auction and it's up to £123. I'm also up to 58 watchers so the last ten minutes of bidding should be interesting (unless they are all TCers keeping an eye on it  ;))

GC

(added after auction end) Blimey, £207! And it's staying in Wales, which is nice. The buyer had been mailing me from very early on and seemed very keen. He's got a nice sidecar for the money, with the exception of the screen it's all there, which is rarely the case.

Mind you it cost me £600 in 1998, with a £400 fitting charge on top of that  :o
(yes yes, I was stupid, but I wasn't savvy enough at that time to have fitted it myself).

So the utility o it as cost you about 50p a week - not too bad then, and £200 for the tax man back too.  Result.

The bloke picked it up today, what a nice fella. Rides an XL600 as his hack, rides enduro and uses a dirt sidecar for long distance trials. He called into me after picking up the screen for it that he'd also bought on Ebay.

Am I sad to see it go? Surprisingly no. I've had a barrel of laughs on it, but it's time to build another outfit with more emphasis on scratching and rallying.
