SRX tappet ajustment

At the risk of sounding totally blond, when do you know for certain when the motor in on the compression stoke? Just rebuilt my SRX and the top end sounds very noisy and one exhaust pipe seems to be much hotter than the other. I've got the manual but i seem to be having a very off day. >:(

Pull the plug out.....with a pencil down the hole, SLOWLY turn the engine over when the pencil stops going up = tdc (don't drop pencil down plug 'ole) if you are looking for compression stroke (which is every other tdc) then, with the tappet covers removed it'll be the tdc with all valves closed (should feel a little play on the tappets, clearance is...if i remember correctly  inlet 2 to 4 thou, exhaust 4 to 6 thou ( set mine at 3 and 5)

... or if the thought of dropping your favourite HB down the barrel is too scary, stick your thumb over the plug'ole - when the pressure starts to build up, you're on the compression stroke.

I have snapped a pencil off before in a two-stroke, so I tend to use a torch to visually check piston TDC and use the pencil/stick/etc to fine tune the position.
